No sound after fresh install

During installation I tested alsa and it was fine. (XCFE)

Now
Code:

GStreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system specific GStreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permissions problem.
There is no sound in Kaffeine using the Xine engine either.

I also have a KDEmod install and its sound has stopped after an update too.

I installed gnome-alsamixer and it is trying to use a Realtek sound card instead of my Nvidia hda.
How can I change this?

Known bug with Alsa.

One workaround is reinstall of kernel and alsa. Since I have just installed cleanly this isn't an option.

Installed OSS and all is well.

I would suggest blacklisting the realtek driver in your rc.conf. Failing that, maybe alsa is in effect setting up 2 sound cards where one is invalid, and a simple trick such as 'alsaconf set-default-card 1' might restore sound when using alsa.
