I use Arch on my laptop as a desktop user (using GNOME). It's fast, stable, easy to keep up to date and I have had absolutely no problems yet.
I don't play games on my laptop, I use my Win2k desktop for that, though I don't see why Arch would be a worse distro for gaming than any other flavor of Linux.

I've got AL installed and like the speed & stability of it. I'm having problems getting my VIA AC'97 onboard sound card working at this moment but other then that, it's a great distro.
I'm currently using WindowMaker desktop and everything is running pretty smooth. I don't play games or have it as a server so I can't speak on those.
No doubt, speed and stability are the main factors. Also selection of X based apps is very good. Doesn't confuse the user with too many similar apps. Gaming I cannot say when not having time to play. I have stopped using other distros after installing Arch Linux (December 2002). But if asked, compatability with other distros Arch Linux packages work fine same as using tarballs (not src but binary, which makes it easier to install and remove). Desktops / Window Managers are same for all distros. But what I like with Arch Linux is the easy install and upgrade, and the latest desktop / wm version is available within short time of release (KDE, Blackbox, Fluxbox, etc. .... about Gnome I cannot say, I did't use).
I use Arch as my main desktop at home and so far I am very pleased with it. The best feature of Arch is the simplicity of it. It's straight forward minimalist approach has the side effect of being very fast and stable.
Right now i'm dual booting Arch Linux with WinXP and I must say I too am impressed with Arch Linux. It's fast, flexible, and easy to maintain...I am also planning on moving fully over to Arch Linux once I can figure out how to get my dialup connection to work in AL.
I've said it before and I'll say it again...I haven't used another distro since I installed Arch. I can't really qualify into words why I like it so much..I guess it's just the one for me.
