help installing as single boot os on macintosh laptop
Hello and thank you for reading my post. This is my first question i am posting in this forum so if i can clarify further please tell me. To start, after some research i have come to the conclusion that arch is probably the best linux distribution for me. I have tried ubuntu on a different machine but i am looking for something simple and free of unnecessary applications.
My question pertains to the first step of the process, so let me explain the particulars. I recently found a year 2006 macbook pro laptop in my house that i really am looking forward to using for some basic webdesign and online work. The dvd drive does not seem to work. After some research i have determined that this version of laptop uses efi instead of the more common bios. When i turned it on for the first time, it did not seem to want to boot to any previous OS so i removed the harddrive and used an external sata cable to browse through it on my windows xp machine.
The files show that there is an osx installation on the drive, but i could not find the osx install cd anywhere. Im not sure if there is a service warranty on this machine but i am sure it has expired since this machine is almost ten years old. That will be ok, since i am not interested in using any macintosh sofware and would prefer to use open-source.
So this leads me to my question. How can i install or build arch linux on this machine? Is it possible to use another machine to configure the harddrive and just pop it in and go? If so how would i do this? If not what can i do to make this laptop usable?
This is a high priority to me as i am worried about the security of my windows machine and really need a secure workstation. Thanks again for reading and thanks in advance for ANY help.
