Have been unable to login vi gdm. Keyboard it totally unresponsive. I temporarily installed kdm which works fine. I would really rather have gdm going. Any ideas anyone?

Are you starting gdm from /etc/inittab or did you add it to the daemons array in /etc/rc.conf?

I had it in the rc.conf. For now I just did a !gdm until I figure out whats goin on. the only /etc/inittab entry I have for gdm is the -nodameon entry. Should I remove this?

I use kdm and the only place I put it was in rc.conf, its probably safe to remove it from inittab if you manual added it before. try disabling both login managers, log in as root and issue one of these commands:
Code:
/etc/rc.d/gdm restart
/etc/rc.d/kdm restart
I believe this is correct, you might have to replace rc.d with init.d. If you are still having problems its probably the login manager itself.

I would recommend using the /etc/inittab method for starting gdm, as described in the ArchWiki
I have seen threads on the Arch forum regarding keyboard troubles that were solved by either using the /etc/inittab file or making sure that gdm is the last entry in the daemons array. Hope that helps.

Wink

K I got it figured out now....I had it in both /etc/rc.conf and /etc/inittab.....just blew away the one in rc.conf all together ...no !gdm....works!!! Thanx for your help folks.

This Arch is really nice. I even installed it at work to test parsing .jsp via Apache with Tomcat....super fast!!! even with the default ARch bloated kernel...I will grab a generic one and see how much better it does
