finding a rough go with eth0 and via_rhine static ip
 

hey there all.

i have a via_rhine ethernet plug on my motherboard.
i just did an install of Arch 7 and cannot get out on the network. my ip is 192.168.1.2 and the computer sharing the internet with me is 192.168.1.1.
it has worked on all other distros i have tried, but i cant get it to work in Arch.

so. i turn to you for help.

ifconfig shows eth0 is up with the right ip address.
gateway in rc.conf has the ! removed from it.

i just dont get it. route shows me what it is supposed to

i can ping my own ip, but i cannot ping my gateway computer. even by ip address.
i even put via_rhing in the list of modules to load at boot.

all i have is a console, no gui (did just a base install, its all i downloaded)
i know the hardware works, because i am trying to switch over from debian to arch.

By the ip address your giving it appears to me that you are using a WindowZ machine to route your info to the internet. Make sure you dint have a firewall working on your gateway, and if I'm right on the router machine try to configure you Linux box to have DHCP as I have seen that service functioning well with DHCP but not with fixed ip address es. If I'm mistaken on your router machine forgive me on that WindowZ crap.

Does the route command give you a some lines like this:

Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 - Important
169.254.0.0 * 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
default 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0


I have seen a case with a box I intalled that had a yukon Gb interface that when the module get loaded it did not update the kernel routing table, so I had everything well configured but I couldn't ping anything not even on my network segment so check if you have a line like the one above that says important.

OK, the router computer is a debian 'sarge' computer.
the router box (debian) is ok, i am switching from debian to Arch, and i have tried a couple of other distros that have worked on it ok.

i will have to post my route output after i get home and look at it. i dont remember it off the top of my head, but i do know that there is no line that says "important" in there. But i am also not using dhcp, just a static ip. Dont know if that matters. the rest of what you posted for a route looks pretty familliar.

Is /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 192.168.0.1

sorry, been a while since i got back to this thread.

there was some info i got on another thread here at arch forums that told me for the via_rhine i need to disable the acpi in the lilo or grub.
i did, it worked.
dig arch so much i replace debian on the other computer too. ( that one went a bit smoother)
