Strange 'logname' Output


Although I login as a particular user, my 'logname' output is 'root' on some boxes. Why?

Because the userid is 0? If $USER is correctly set, grep "^$USER:" /etc/passwd should show.

You are right. How could that have happened? And is it advisable to modify that value in /etc/passwd?
