Having a problem getting a console session on an AIX Lpar
I'm an experienced system admin with little AIX experience, and I need some assistance. I recently inherited a pair of AIX 5.2 servers, of which one is (I believe) an Lpar. The hostnames are cw203 and cw203a. I have no trouble gaining console access to cw203a, but when attempt the same thing on cw203, the window opens, but I don't get a login prompt and can't enter any input.
I've noticed that the tty definitions for /dev/tty0 are different. On cw203a (the good one), /dev/tty0 is configured as follows (smitty display):
TTY tty0
TTY type tty
TTY interface vcon
Description Asynchronous Terminal
Status Available
Location
Parent adapter sa4
PORT number [0] +
Enable LOGIN disable +
TIME before advancing to next port setting [0] +#
TERMINAL type [vt320]
FLOW CONTROL to be used [xon] +
STTY attributes for RUN time [hupcl, cread, brkint,ic>
On cw203, /dev/tty0 is configured as follows:
TTY tty0
TTY type tty
TTY interface rs232
Description Asynchronous Terminal
Status Available
Location 01-S1-00-00
Parent adapter sa0
PORT number [0] +
Enable LOGIN disable +
BAUD rate [9600] +
PARITY [none] +
BITS per character [8] +
Number of STOP BITS [1] +
What do I need to do to get console access on cw203 working? I appreciate in advance any assistance...
If you do have LPARs then you should have an HMC (hardware management console) that controls them. From there you should be able to open a console window. It looks to me like the second machine is setup to use a serial console. We've got an old green screen serial terminal that we shuffle around for old machines that won't boot, but for the most part the HMC is the console for all the newer machines.
What is in first section of the output of 'prtconf'? It should tell you a bit about the machine and if it's an LPAR.
Thanks for the quick response. We do, in fact, have an HMC for these systems. What I should have stated in the initial post is that I can't get a responsive terminal window for cw203 through the HMC, whereas I can for cw203a.
Following is the prtconf output for cw203:

Following is the prtconf output for cw203a:
