Boot problems

I have an IBM PC with IAX 4.3.3 installed on. When i boot up i receive the message: "Press 2 to select this console". And my clock is resetting every time. Do i have to change the BIOS battery ? If i change it, do i have to make some modifications ?

Turn it off, take out the plug / power lead.
Change the battery - yes your battery is flat.
Plug it in and turn on.
Select the console, set the time, you're done.
As long as the battery is in good shape - it should last another 5 - 10 yrs - you shouldn't need to keep resetting things.
If it all seems to work OK at the moment, apart from the console and time, nothing else should be affected by changing the battery.
If you have further problems please post again and we'll do our best to help you out.
If you are worried about the potential RISC ( get it? RISC - haha - RISC / RS 6000... oh well) then let us know the machine type and model and we can walk you through backing up the service processor - if it has one - or backing up / recording any other settings, like the boot list, that may possibly be lost when you replace the battery.

There is a label on the case and it says 604e and 375 Mhz.
If the battery is almost over, when i remove it, i should only select the console and change the time. But this message that says to select the console is normal when the battery is terminated ?
I have noticed one thing. If i turn it off and i remove the power cord for a short time, when i turn it on again all is fine.

This is how the computer looks like
L.E. Only the unit below the monitor. I don't know what is with that unit from the right. Maybe is an UPS.

I think that is a 7043 43p 150.

Here are the books:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...343pseries.htm

Did the system have a graphics console in the past?

In the user's guide check the SMS chapter and then try booting to SMS, go to the utilities menu and then use option 7 to set the console, it may just be that is was set to another serial port or the graphics adapter in the past and you just need to change it to your current console.

It seems very odd that you do not see the problem after it has been unplugged for a short time.

It seems that if the system does not hold the date and time then either the battery is becoming flat, or the system board might be faulty, I'd try replacing the battery first!

The settings in SMS can be lost if the battery is failing and here the console is set.

What does the AIX command prtconf show? feel free to remove or change the serial number and any other sensitive information if you would prefer not to post it here.

HTH.
