Always an interesting poll.

Voted for Sublime Text, again this was not easy.
I also like (and work a lot with Kate) and for the Command Line, I love to work with Nano and Vim.

I use vim almost exclusively, at home and at work, so this was easy for me.

Vim 8 came out this year! How can it not be the winner?

rokytnji 12-28-2016 01:25 PM

Voted Geany.

sycamorex 12-28-2016 03:01 PM

Voted Atom but then I realised that it's not an IDE category, just a text editor. My vote should then gone to Vim.

gedit is what I use for HTML coding. Works for me.

I find that some of the choices are really hard to fit...

For example, Kate and Kwrite are pretty much similar in their user interface, but Kwrite is just a text editor like notepad, while Kate does offer code syntax, colorization, etc. One could use Kwrite for making simple notes or write up a quick text, but use Kate for coding. Also nano and vim are great for CLI use and I use both of them extensively, but for writing HTML/CSS I prefer Sublime, while for texts or simple code I use Kate (I do not use Kwrite).

You're definitely not alone. I like bits and pieces of a lot of programs, and it's often difficult to pick one over another.

Sometimes I like to pick things that I think are a little underrated or underrepresented here. Feel free to pick your own reasons to vote. ;)

Depends what you're using it for. I use geany for programming, gvim for most other things. I use vim when I'm working at a terminal and need to do a quick edit, but I prefer gvim for serious editing.

Does Vim have any advantages over Neovim which has:
-- asynchronous processing
-- Lua scripting
-- terminal emulation (may replace the need for tmux)
-- decoupling the UI from the core
-- takes vim's platform specific code and replaces it with libuv (a multi-platform support library with a focus on asynchronous I/O)

If I'm in a text environment &/or only needing a quick fix - I use vi.

If I'm in mc, I'll use mcedit.

Voted for vi. :)

Like my OS (netinst) why go for clones tho not ed (line editor :p) vi! :D Kate should also get my vote but for some reason can't?

FredGSanford 01-02-2017 09:11 AM

Depends which environment I may be using, but when I do net installs, I go with mousepad.
