cant vote, dont beleave in "cloud".. its all fancy marketing. a buzz word. ill think anyone ever with a linux maschine in the local network used it to store something.. first it had no name.. than we call it NAS and now "cloud".. i think its dumb. no offense to anyone :)

I can understand your feeling on this, Stuferus, but you are wrong. There are definable differences that actually make cloud a unique offering from previous network options. Many standards organizations have even defined it to include NIST and the ITU - Two of the most respected non-biased standards organizations outside of ISO itself. NAS and networking in general do not fit the definitions for cloud. That said, the offerings listed should more correctly be labelled "Cloud Platforms" as they are not clouds in and of themselves, but rather key infrastructure components to enable cloud services.

ownCloud worked nicely as a container from Turnkey Linux installed on our Proxmox server, which runs on Debian Wheezy. All Open Source, all free to use.

Hey Jeremy- SmartOS should be in this list. Yah, the hypervisor itself is OpenSolaris derivative, but you can otherwise run pretty much any virtual machine you want. And as the title of this poll is "Open Source" rather than "Linux" Cloud Solution, SmartOS meets the criteria.

The term "cloud" itsself has existed long before the www. The cloud was simply used to represent an external network in old telco drawings.

Jeremy: What do you mean by "Cloud Solution"? Complete stack? Management gui. It's a complex topic and I'm unclear about your defitions.

Well, it's got to be Open Source. So that rules out "providers" like AWS, etc.

ownCloud is pretty much just an open source DropBox replacement, i.e. focuses on storage for various devices and such. Cloud Storage is not really what I think of as a "Cloud Solution". Eucalyptus is basically a front end for AWS....

Anyways, I still think SmartOS should be in this list because... you don't spec that it has to be Linux anywhere.

And you're also missing OpenStack... so not sure about this category...

Owncloud does more than just storage though since it supports contacts, calendar, and has better synching.

gotfw, As with many of the MCA categories the definition is a bit broad. That said, OpenStack has been a nominee since the poll opened. SmartOS is an OS+Hypervisor so is not really a good fit in this category.

Ugh! My eyes missed OpenStack. So +1 for it out of above.

Regarding SmartOS. Yes, it is a hypervisor. A kick ass one that offers both native Solaris style zones/containers, kvg, zfs, dtrace, and crossbow. Pretty killer stack to host bunches of virtual machines and build a cloud on, if you ask me :)
