Nagios Core + NConf

Hmmm.... another category that doesn't really fit the LQ user profile so it seems we have various low post count contenders crawling out of the woodwork promoting their fave product. So take that with a large dose of salt...

That said, here's my $.02:

In years past I have voted OpenNMS. And then maybe Zabbix. This past year, however, I worked with nagios and check_mk and was favorably impressed. CheckMK goes along ways towards resolving nagios's many warts and gets rid of vexing backend rdbms bottleneck issues at scale. Written in Python and fairly comprehensible to deal with if you need to roll your own plugin, etc. It's hard to vote for Nagios on it's own though cuz that pretty much still sucks (as evidenced by the many derivatives/spinoffs). Hmm... decisions, decisions... Moreover, there are a couple in this list that I'm unfamiliar with so going to have to ponder this one a bit. MCA's are always a chance to learn/explore.

The number of close source Nagios is interesting for a LINUX website

Recently i found in graphite a great solution to get metrics from nagios for intervals of 1 minute.

I have been using several NMSes for years - even some commercial ones.
In early 2014 I decided to try zabbix and was able to get rid of cacti and nagios.
In the meantime I am really impressed about the variety and quantity of features Zabbix has.

Zabbix by a mile. Its SNMP low level discovery and other specific SNMP support elements make it stand out from other Enterprise NMS solution that focus agent based management and only consider SNMP as an after thought.

Not even remotely. But I guess if you need to believe that, then I can't argue the point.

Unix does not suck. It's success resulted in numerous commercial and open source variants.

Nagios, in it's non commercial implementation, sucks. Hence, imo, you absolutely MUST pair it with something else, e.g. CheckMK. Else use one of the spinoffs.

Really? Ho man! Have you ever used OpenNMS? It's raison d'etre is SNMP discovery. To the fault of not doing all that great a job on other stuff. I think, however, that they've leveraged the CheckMK agent for client side polling and such.

All of these tools have their warts. I'm really impressed with Nagios Core coupled with CheckMK though. Ditching the rdbms requisite is also a win. Monitoring is complex enough w/o needing to add rdbms management into the mix.

It's been a few years since I used Zabbix. I might should take a look at it again.

Nagios. It was a bear to set up, but it works great. I just need to get some graphs out of it and the higher up will be happy.

All through my years of working. Nagios is always my best friend....
