Desktop Environment of the Year

If you're looking for Fluxbox, Window Maker, Enlightenment or similar options - they are in the Window Manager of the Year poll.

k3lt01 12-17-2012 07:17 PM

I have to admit it I like Gnome 3 but I like MATE even more and I use MATE more than any other DE.

brashley46 12-17-2012 10:14 PM

Xfce makes for a lean, mean desktop machine. 8)

sycamorex 12-18-2012 02:27 AM

If I used any of the DEs, it'd be XFce

brianL 12-18-2012 03:46 AM

KDE (4.9.4, thanks to Alien Bob) on my desktop, Xfce on my laptop and netbook.

jezzivi 12-18-2012 04:08 AM

KDE on my desktop, Openbox on my netbook.

jv2112 12-18-2012 04:55 AM

 .............Open box......yes it can be used in place of..................

PhoenixAndThor 12-18-2012 04:59 AM

LXDE hands down, though I rarely use it. I always wind up hacking my desktop together out of dzen, dmenu, a tiling wm, conky, and a bunch of scripts. Perhaps "keyboard driven Erector set" should be added to list? :)

Keith Hedger 12-18-2012 05:50 AM

Switched to Xfce4 when Gnome devs lost the the plot, now on LFS.

kooru 12-18-2012 05:54 AM

xfce :)

RockDoctor 12-18-2012 06:27 AM

My preferred DE is LXDE, but my vote went to Cinnamon because I find it to be Gnome3 done right

metalaarif 12-18-2012 08:40 AM

Gnome

netmanny 12-18-2012 10:58 AM

As far as I'm concern there is no better desktop environment than e17.

cxbii 12-18-2012 11:05 AM

I like KDE!

snowday 12-18-2012 11:31 AM

Gnome, it's what's in the news.

stolid 12-18-2012 11:40 AM

XFCE. I tend to stick to Openbox with some select applications these days though. I think I prefer tint2 and Thunar instead of LXDE's lxpanel and PCmanFM. I feel like maybe I would like KDE after finding a non-fisher-price theme for it. MATE is a decent choice too.

fewt 12-18-2012 12:39 PM

GNOME 2, but that isn't a poll option. XD

anticapitalista 12-18-2012 02:40 PM

Rox plus icewm/fluxbox/jwm

DaneM 12-18-2012 09:36 PM

W00T! A DE that's sane, again!

Yay for Mate! So glad there's now a viable alternative to the "DE mess" that's been plaguing Linux since Gnome 3 and Unity came out! It's fun to use again! :-)

Fewt: Mate is a fork of Gnome 2 (by the Linux Mint folks), and has added-back the features that were removed from Gnome 2 a couple years ago. Give it a try! :-)

Not entirely accurate, MATE is a fork of Gnome 2 by Perberos. Linux Mint helps out but also has it's finger in a few other pies.

ahzthecat 12-18-2012 11:27 PM

I use KDE with my Slack, but the DE that has impressed me the most and seems to have come the farthest this year has to be Cinnamon. I opted to install Mint on my netbook over things like Ubuntu and Slackware simply because Cinnamon was so simple and elegant, while still being fully featured. Big props to the Mint team!

DaneM I know what MATE is. ;) I was in the MATE IRC channel the day it was announced. ;) I have no reason to use it, as I still work on supporting GNOME 2.

swftech 12-19-2012 08:13 AM

Xfce 4.10 is my choice, it has come a long way, and now that Thunar has tabbed browsing to go with plenty of custom actions it's even better. Fully customizable without the bloat :D

dlinux100 12-19-2012 08:45 AM

LXDE

Poprocks 12-19-2012 02:37 PM

I voted Cinnamon because its release was a bit of a surprise to me and it has made great headway in the past year. Best of all time would be a toss-up between KDE3 and GNOME2 to me, and best to use right now would go to KDE4, but "Desktop Environment of the Year" is Cinnamon in my view.

schneidz 12-19-2012 02:51 PM

i wouldve voted for project blue-bubble but it is very obscure so gnome-3 is the closest match.

paolode 12-19-2012 06:58 PM

mate

DaneM 12-20-2012 06:29 PM

Thanks for the clarification on Mate. :-)

parkerlreed 12-20-2012 10:11 PM

mate-desktop

gdejonge 12-21-2012 12:13 AM

KDE on my workstation and laptop. LXDE on my server. :)

E17 is a window manager, just so you know, you can vote for it in the window managers of the year.

Thanks for clearing that up. I am sick of seeing people announce Linux Mint forked Mate. I knew it was some folks over in the Arch community, but wasn't sure who exactly, thanks. +1

Out of interest, k3lt, what did you vote for Gnome or Mate?

spoovy 12-21-2012 11:47 AM

KDE4 had totally come of age this year. Properly mature and stable. PIM and poor default settings are still weak points, but overall it's a cracking desktop and definately should be the default linux desktop now.

audriusk 12-21-2012 04:01 PM

Another year with KDE, it simply works.

MATE.

Syndarkis 12-23-2012 11:46 PM

I've always been partial to Gnome 2. With that said, my vote goes to MATE.

LXDE

Mr. Bill 12-25-2012 11:25 AM

Unity, because it just makes sense. Seriously, I fail to understand what all the fuss was about over in the Ubuntu forums. Sure, it's a little different and takes a few minutes to learn, but Unity is a full-featured DE that I consider one of the easiest to use without a lot of useless, unnecessary, resource-hogging eye candy.

If it wasn't for the universal taskbar, i'd like Unity.

Unity is a modified Gnome 3 with an Ubuntu appearence. Just like Cinnamon is a modified Gnome 3 with a Mint appearence.

To each his own, but that's what I do like about Unity. :) The launchbar has a clean, organized appearance, you can customize it with the programs you want, and it's certainly a lot more useful than the "jello" windows from Gnome/Compiz.

Uh huh... and XFCE is Gnome2 with a few config options missing, but it still works for those who like it. :)

Nope, not at all. XFCE is not Gnome 2 with a few config ......... It is XFCE, it started with Xforms toolkit but moved to GTK about XFCE3. Gnome has always been built with GTK.

Well, i'll disagree with the word certainly, but if it works for you, that's great.

I hate to but in on this, but you've missed the point.
I'm pretty sure k3lt, was referring to the remark you made, 'Unity is a full-featured DE'. Unity, although, Ubunuts "desktop environment", the only part that is unity is the shell (the main part you interact with), besides the shell, it's still Gnome 3 with the window manager switched. Although, i believe Ubuntu has forked Nautilus to behave differently with Unity now?
That's how i'd describe it anyway. It's a technicality, which is irrelevant to the thread and can cause confusion in my opinion.

PrinceCruise 12-26-2012 08:09 AM

KDE ForTheWin once again. (Thanks to Slackware)

Regards.

cowlitzron 12-27-2012 08:51 PM

I voted KDE, the best choice for a desktop. Razor-Qt would probably be the best choice for a notebook for those who run mostly Qt apps.

sunnydrake 12-29-2012 10:20 AM

Desktop
Gnome-shell (voted) this buggy can of rats.. arggg but otherwise quite good.
Multi-Touch Tablets
seeking solution for multi touch tablets
Cairo - well currently only one usable solution for me. With some caveats in UI and not very pleasant virtual keyboard solution.
KWin/PlasmaActive - not this one = multi touch is buggy and unusable. But UI is good.
Android-x86 4.0 - i think it works with limited amount of specific hardware good.. not managed to get it up and running on same hardware but not from project supported manufacturer. Android is currently have one of best touch oriented interfaces around.
Yet untested Sugar DE.

decodedthought 12-31-2012 03:52 PM

xfce ... tried gnome 3.6 recently and with the tracker-miner-fs omg !!! :-x

Wait...last time I checked, Unity required compiz--which is (IMHO) the very epitome of resource-hogging, bloated, buggy "eye candy." I dare say, I hope my information is out-of date! (Maybe it just hates my hardware...?)

Still, whatever you like, kudos for finding it! :-) One great thing about *nix is the variety!

teresaejunior 01-01-2013 07:25 PM

Xfce4 has improved a lot since I started using it in 2010.

digigold 01-02-2013 04:03 PM

I use the CLI most, but when I want a GUI I strongly prefer KDE as I find it to be functional, customizable, and good looking. I will say that I have been impressed with razorqt w/kwin and now use it instead of LXDE when I desire a lighter DE then KDE. I would use GNOME if someone put a gun to the back of my head....just kidding, I'd rather they squeeze the trigger :D
