Mutter is the WM for gnome 3.

jeremy 12-21-2011 04:17 PM

Mutter has been added.

I miss wmii, I know that some people here use it.

jeremy 12-22-2011 04:34 PM

It doesn't appear that wmii had a release in 2011.

Enlightenment should get more votes this year because of the success of the new Bodhi Linux distro which feature the new e17 version. I find Enlightenment e17 to be the most light weight Windows manager that has full keyboard shortcuts and can be configured the way I want.

Hevithan 12-28-2011 04:24 PM

I wanted to say Compiz, But I was reffered to try fluxbox and I love the hell out of it (i use gnome/flux about 50/50). So I'm saying flux on this.

segmentation_fault 12-28-2011 05:42 PM

I would vote for blackbox, but I don't see it on the list.

chrisretusn 12-28-2011 07:05 PM

Well it stands to reason if KDE is my favorite desktop, then KWin is my favorite windows manager. :)

Nylex 12-29-2011 12:45 AM

The "b" in Openbox shouldn't be capitalised.

sycamorex 12-29-2011 04:48 AM

i3 is the one I feel most comfortable with.

Fluxbox and IceWM get my vote.

FredGSanford 12-29-2011 12:00 PM

Wow, it's the time of year already...I always go with Openbox and since I like Gnome 2, I'll say Metacity also!

lewnidas_ 12-30-2011 10:31 AM

OpenBox with ArchBang...!!! :D

Cultist 12-30-2011 11:28 PM

Enlightenment. beautiful minimalism, with a few hiccups but nothing devastating. I love everything about it.

raju.mopidevi 12-31-2011 07:49 AM

Compiz, it is very good !

EricTRA 12-31-2011 08:09 AM

Hi,

I switch between Gnome with Compiz and Awesome with a tendency towards Awesome the more I use it.

Kind regards,

Eric

gilead 12-31-2011 03:30 PM

Fluxbox is my preferred choice - I love starting apps with keystrokes or right-clicks (and not being tied to a start menu in one location)

MrCode 01-02-2012 07:23 AM

Compiz…and not just for the eye candy. :p

weirdwolf 01-02-2012 10:55 PM

Openbox

Lately I had been impressed by e17 (via slacke17: http://slacke17.sourceforge.net/): fast and lightweight

Randicus Draco Albus 01-03-2012 09:42 PM

I vote for Openbox.
I find it the best, because it is easily configured and can do almost everything I want my computer interface to do.
The only problem is that Openbox is easy to configure after a person has figured it out or had someone tell them. It is the best for people who possess some knowledge, but almost useless for beginners. It would be nice if GNU-Linux beginners could also experience the joy of using Openbox!

TedHornsby84 01-03-2012 10:52 PM

I just started using fluxbox recently and love it! The text-based configuration enables nearly limitless customization, and the small impact on system resources is great for those of us who find many desktop environments too bloated.

metalaarif 01-04-2012 05:36 AM

Sure I was confused searching for GNOME or KDE, I haven't used much I sure like compiz but was too flashy.

Kruptnick 01-04-2012 09:57 AM

I tried IceWM, EvilWM... Somehow it didn't fit. Now I use ratpoison on my laptop and it is all I wanted.
Voted Fluxbox because I still use Fluxbox or Metacity on this computer most of the time.

JimBrewster 01-04-2012 11:23 AM

I've been doing a lot of WM-hopping lately, so it was tough to pick just one. When I want all the bells and whistles KDE4 provides them, but most of my boxes and VM's are too old/weak for that kind of stuff! On the light end openbox, iceWM, fluxbox all fill the bill, but I voted ratpoison!

Gomer_X 01-04-2012 03:46 PM

FVWM. It does what I want. It doesn't has very few dependencies. It can be configured to do nearly anything. Its handling of virtual desktops makes the most sense to me.

tallship 01-04-2012 07:01 PM

Where is Twin?

I think Twin should be in the list - Yes, it should definately be in the list - it's what I use.

I voted for Enlightenment, because I've had a softspot for it now for a decade or so, but really, if you're going to have RatPoison, you should have Twin, which works and runs with and within everything (including consoles xterms, whatever), and you can run screen or tmux inside of twterms too (or if you're really sadistic you can run Twin inside of Tmux and Screen LOL)!

It just freakin' rocks!

Please, if you can Jeremy, add Twin and I'll change my vote for that.

The main site has gone offline within the past six months or so, which had a wealth of information, and I'll see if I can't get the original copy from Max,or activate my old mirror of the site, but the Sourceforge repository is still there of course, and there was a recent release about a year ago too.

Since it works, there's not much need for updates - just bug-fixes when they show up. the last update dealt with better workings under 64bit OSes, for example.

The sourceforge site for Twin is here: The Sourceforge site for Twin - A textmode window environment for Linux

While the original home page (which may or may not be back online soon) is/was located here: Twin - textmode window environment for Linux

I hope that helps :)

Kindest regards,

.

JimBrewster 01-05-2012 04:43 AM

tallship, I just installed Twin, and it does look pretty awesome! Thanks!

jeremy 01-05-2012 02:33 PM

It doesn't look like there has been a Twin release in over 18 months. If there a release between now and the next MCA's will consider adding it next year.

Regrettably....

Tried keeping an open mind and gave Gnome3 a couple/few months but in the final analysis whatever coolness it may have gets in my way of getting work done. Which brings me, like so many, to the search for alternatives. With the ongoing dumbing down of the DE's in the name of 'usability' there is a certain attraction to kicking it old school and returning to stand alone wm. Along such lines, I've been a proponent of OpenBox since the number of users on irc channel could be counted on one hand, but....

I've toyed with a few in this list as of late and I keep coming back to two tiling offerings: Awesome and Scrotwm.

igadoter 01-06-2012 02:21 PM

Last year I started to use fvwm (in it preconfigured version fvwm-themes). My history are: kwin, metacity, awesome (old version), fluxbox, blackbox, twm, WindowMaker, enlightenment (gold), xfce. But fvwm has some really nice features I miss in other wm's.

camuflage 01-07-2012 08:52 AM

Missing Blackbox

Sailor Tom 01-14-2012 06:50 AM

KWin. Definitely!

xev 01-19-2012 07:40 AM

Love dwm :D

linux4life88 01-27-2012 07:51 PM

Openbox

I voted for Openbox, which is by far the best window manager I have ever used. It is highly configurable and it allows me to run Linux without a desktop environment, which is truly ideal.

DaneM 02-01-2012 01:47 AM

Marco, please. :-)

MATE's version of MetaCity.

rMatey 02-01-2012 06:41 AM

Window Manager

Still prefer Compiz

I always find it interesting that (apparently because the default config is lacking in eye candy) people dismiss fvwm. When I am forced into using other WMs I am continually annoyed by how difficult it is to do any configuration besides the basic eye candy stuff. I have read a lot of articles, but I have not yet seen one feature of another WM that made me say "I wish fvwm could do that".

I second this as I could not have said it better. I use strictly Openbox in Arch Linux on both my laptop as well as desktop.

hydraMax 02-01-2012 01:01 PM

+1 for Xmonad and the tiling window manager paradigm. Xinerama was never so much fun before I made the switch.

MrRtd 02-01-2012 09:33 PM

Kwin for me.

Kwin for my desktop. Really like it. But for my old laptop, I installed Bodhi and find that Bodhi/e17 to be an excellent performer on low-spec computers.

savotije 02-06-2012 12:47 PM

Enlightenment

PrinceCruise 02-08-2012 10:59 AM

I had good time with Openbox on Mint-9. So voting for it.
Enlightenment could get my vote, but I found Openbox could be more easily customized than E17, so....

Regards.

Satyaveer Arya 02-08-2012 11:48 AM

Compiz is good one.

buan 02-08-2012 10:10 PM

Openbox

Openbox!

Started using it with CrunchBang back when the new "Light" design/re-design/re-branding of Ubuntu was released (10.04 LTS IIRC), but had been wanting to try *box for years before that but never got around to it. Minimalistic. I love it.
