Window Manager of the Year

If you are looking for KDE, Gnome, etc they are in the Desktop Environment Award.

Fluxbox

smeezekitty 01-08-2010 11:52 AM

Hmm, i need to figure out what the difference between a "window manager" and a "desktop manager" is.

H_TeXMeX_H 01-08-2010 01:10 PM

you mean desktop environment ? well a desktop environment includes additional programs, these would mostly include KDE, GNOME, XFCE. Fluxbox on the other hand does not come with additional programs such as a file manager, image viewer, document viewer, etc.

bathory 01-08-2010 04:02 PM

Another one for fluxbox

linus72 01-08-2010 04:12 PM

e17 & e17-svn

very nice

Mol_Bolom 01-09-2010 01:06 AM

Since no dwm I selected openbox since I use it once in a while.

~sHyLoCk~ 01-09-2010 02:02 AM

compiz and fluxbox, chose compiz.

gotfw 01-10-2010 04:11 AM

There are a couple in the list I'm unfamiliar with, e.g. "Awesome", but otherwise OpenBox takes the cake, hands down.

exvor 01-10-2010 08:54 PM

IceWM even if its kinda buggy these days with themes. Second choice would be fluxbox a tried and true friend that spans the ages.

Mark7 01-11-2010 05:23 AM

If any poll needed an "other" category this is surely it.

MBybee 01-11-2010 09:25 AM

Compiz is finally working properly for me, so I'm going to go with it. Besides, it was the first wm that made my wife say "Oooo - I want that on my machine"
:)

devnull10 01-11-2010 01:20 PM

fvwm gets my vote - I prefer to start with nothing (ie a black .fvwm2rc file!) and build up the wm exactly how I want it. As I go along I still add the odd tweak here and there as I think of them however my wm works great for me now and what is what matters! :) Whether anybody else would be able to use it as fluently doesn't matter to me - I am the only one using this pc! :)

MrCode 01-11-2010 04:07 PM

I voted Compiz. Yes, I'm a sucker for visuals ;)

But in all seriousness, that's not the only reason I use it. I like compositing and H/W acceleration, too. :D No more blit smearing!

exvor 01-11-2010 06:13 PM

I thought compiz was a windows manager enhancer not a wm it self?

lupusarcanus 01-11-2010 06:17 PM

Compiz. Makes my desktop look like a freakin' Star Wars movie.

Compiz is a stand-alone WM.

neuman 01-11-2010 09:11 PM

I am using JWM. It is very good for me.

GooseYArd 01-11-2010 09:16 PM

what, no xmonad?

nuxrl 01-11-2010 09:18 PM

Openbox gets my vote.

huwnet 01-12-2010 04:13 AM

Compiz, although I've been considering switching back to Metacity w/compositing

mjjzf 01-12-2010 12:10 PM

I am not using any standalone WM, and I haven't really heard much on the WM front - except perhaps a bit more Awesome fans than usual. So I won't vote on this one.

code933k 01-12-2010 12:34 PM

Another year without polling Xmonad... F* off! I will go with ratpoison although awesome deserves some praise here.

jeremy 01-12-2010 12:35 PM

Despite the attitude in your post, xmonad has been added.

I really appreciate that addition. Thanks Jeremy!

JMJ_coder 01-12-2010 03:12 PM

What, no TWM?

No seriously guys whos crazy enough to use TWM :p

linus72 01-12-2010 06:14 PM

e17 or e17-svn for debian/ubuntu

fvwm-crystal is a very close 2nd:)

Mark7 01-13-2010 02:26 AM

How about the "other" option for those of use who use really obscure WMs?

sycamorex 01-13-2010 06:54 AM

Fluxbox from me

jeremy 01-13-2010 09:11 AM

We don't plan on adding an "Other" option to any of the polls, but feel free to post your Other suggestions as comments.

--jeremy

raju.mopidevi 01-13-2010 08:36 PM

compiz

indienick 01-15-2010 10:02 PM

I voted for xmonad, as it's the closest thing there is to a comfortable, tiling window manager. :)
StumpWM comes close, but I just wish it didn't force the need for a prefix key-sequence - I personally wish it behaved a little more like xmonad.

As far as other WMs I use go, I am also quite partial to CWM (on OpenBSD).

Pekwm

DoogieHowser 01-19-2010 09:18 PM

I Vote fvwm

anticapitalista 01-20-2010 09:05 AM

fluxbox gets the vote, but icewm is not far behind. (BTW icewm theme problems are now fixed)

the1sephiroth 01-20-2010 12:44 PM

I haven't invested much time in finding the differences between any of these and so I stick with the default for ubuntu. Which I'm pretty sure is metacity. And I enable the effects which makes it fun :) If I'm wrong, oh well -- metacity gets an uninformed vote.

AleLinuxBSD 01-20-2010 12:54 PM

icewm
I like is simple configuration and i use it on Linux and Bsd system, in the future i hope to use it even on OpenSolaris.

I'm pretty sure if you've enabled Desktop Effects you're no longer using Metacity; it switches to Compiz. It's okay, though, Compiz is cool ;)

ntrudaglich 01-20-2010 04:21 PM

I've been running Fvwm on Slackware for some time now, and just started playing around with Awesome on OpenBSD. So I voted Fvwm.

Thanks for the info. But it seems that my vote went to the wrong place =)

SpaceGoat 01-20-2010 11:50 PM

I cast another vote for the elegance of simplicity

trentfox 01-21-2010 05:44 AM

Openbox was my selection; implementated is fantastic in #!CrunchBang.

Ahh I do see that they have some changes this year I will have to download it and compile it promptly. I really do hope the themes have been fixed I will have to test it and see if its working. I am actually surprised to see this out since there was no activity on the mailing list( I am currently subscribed). I know that I mentioned it so maybe someone saw that and did some work :)

DJ_Maiko 01-21-2010 07:59 PM

Fluxbox & Metacity are ok. Compiz is pretty cool. But my vote goes to Enlightenment. By far, the most elegant & pretty window manager I've ever seen! The only downside is that it's a bit of a resource-hog which makes sense considering all it's doing & I can live with that. ;)

Count Zero 01-27-2010 11:57 AM

Fluxbox. This year. Last year. Next year. Fluxbox. Fluxbox. Fluxbox.

Niniel 01-28-2010 08:22 AM

I use Blackbox in Windows, but it's so much better than the *NIX original that I can prefer Fluxbox under Linux.

Wifi-Fanatux 01-28-2010 06:09 PM

XFWM

I use XFWM. I just went to using XFCE as my go to desktop environment this year after KDE3 was starting to not be provided as an option in so many distros. I discovered a lot of themes at xfce-look.org, and even found it pretty easy to create my own XFWM theme. Check it out: Pewterburg-Gold.
As I discovered more about the window manager, I found out that only recently it has the capabilities of prelight effects for the buttons, but I really like it's versatility.

SCerovec 01-29-2010 03:16 PM

XFWM bumped since KDE4 ditched konqueror, so they get my vote this year
:)
XFCE team! stay cool :)

Since I note from elsewhere that you're a fan of "rolling your own" you may want to check out OpenBOX, wh/is an awesome fast and lightweight window manager if you're willing to spend the time tweaking it to your personal tastes. I'm lazy in my old age and just go with the convenience of default Gnome these days, but back in the day when I was more into such things my OpenBOX set up was my fave ever. That was just one lean, mean, and clean desktop that did everything just the way I wanted it to w/o getting in the way. Oh, and just for reference, it replaced Fluxbox, wh/in had in turn replaced Blackbox.... Which probably goes some ways towards explaining why I am so opinionated about the idiocy that some of the HIG fascists have enforced upon us....
