Window Manager of the Year

If you are looking for KDE, Gnome, etc they are in the Desktop Environment Award.

Fluxbox

Hmm, i need to figure out what the difference between a "window manager" and a "desktop manager" is.

H_TeXMeX_H 01-08-2010 01:10 PM

you mean desktop environment ? well a desktop environment includes additional programs, these would mostly include KDE, GNOME, XFCE. Fluxbox on the other hand does not come with additional programs such as a file manager, image viewer, document viewer, etc.

Another one for fluxbox

e17 & e17-svn

very nice

Mol_Bolom 01-09-2010 01:06 AM

Since no dwm I selected openbox since I use it once in a while.

~sHyLoCk~ 01-09-2010 02:02 AM

compiz and fluxbox, chose compiz.

gotfw 01-10-2010 04:11 AM

There are a couple in the list I'm unfamiliar with, e.g. "Awesome", but otherwise OpenBox takes the cake, hands down.

exvor 01-10-2010 08:54 PM

IceWM even if its kinda buggy these days with themes. Second choice would be fluxbox a tried and true friend that spans the ages.

Mark7 01-11-2010 05:23 AM

If any poll needed an "other" category this is surely it.

MBybee 01-11-2010 09:25 AM

Compiz is finally working properly for me, so I'm going to go with it. Besides, it was the first wm that made my wife say "Oooo - I want that on my machine"
:)

devnull10 01-11-2010 01:20 PM

fvwm gets my vote - I prefer to start with nothing (ie a black .fvwm2rc file!) and build up the wm exactly how I want it. As I go along I still add the odd tweak here and there as I think of them however my wm works great for me now and what is what matters! :) Whether anybody else would be able to use it as fluently doesn't matter to me - I am the only one using this pc! :)

MrCode 01-11-2010 04:07 PM

I voted Compiz. Yes, I'm a sucker for visuals ;)

But in all seriousness, that's not the only reason I use it. I like compositing and H/W acceleration, too. :D No more blit smearing!

exvor 01-11-2010 06:13 PM

I thought compiz was a windows manager enhancer not a wm it self?
