You might take a look at Softmaker Office. I think it will do all you are asking and can create ms-office 2007 documents. Unfortunately, I don't think it is free, but the cost is a fraction, around 65 Euros, of ms-office.

I'd say online office suites should not count. They can be used on any OS with an internet connection, and do not have anything whatsoever to do with Linux.

I voted OpenOffice, I like it best. I even use it with my Windows computer now.

OpenOffice. Although I use Star Office on the eeePC, it's OpenOffice I feel more comfortable with, although there's little, if any, actual difference in functionality for my purposes.

Apparently OpenOffice 3.2 will have the ability to create and save ms-office 2007 documents.
OpenOffice 3.2 Release Candidate 3 was posted a few days ago so a stable version of 3.2 shouldn't be too far away.

My choice is not listed. Ever heard of Evermore Integrated Office? Comes in both Win and Linux included in the price. No, it's not free and it is proprietary. Very inexpensive in fact. So, it's already ported and has noooo learning curve from MS to EIO. Talk about catching flies with honey!! It can wean even Windozers.

It does spread, word and presentastion in one binder under one file format. Copy-paste data from word to spread in one go and it follows changes! Successfully converts files to and from .doc, .xls and the .eio range of extensions.

The latest version of OpenOffice (3.1.1) can save in the MS 2007 docx formats. All you need is the latest version.

I have not since paid any licence fees of any kind. I mention the prices only since it is relevant in decision-making. Home now costs US$14.95. Professional US$49.95.

The small differences like Alt-w-r-v as against Alt w-a-v to arrange Windows vertically in the app are really nothing to write home about. You can actually see your Spread, Word and Presentation in the same window together or singly. There is no need to open docs separately and do big transfers. You just click on a special toolbar with three icons.

It simply does not scrunch files in conversion. Make two folders; MSOffice and Evermore. Put the file you want to convert into the correct folder. MS to MS, EIO to EIO and convert to the other format. Click on the Convert icon on your Desktop and select the correct folders for origin and destination. Go. Once done, clear the original file from it's folder or it will get converted again. This is the only caveat I've picked up so far. You can e-mail the resultant .docs, .xls files and no one will know any better. Oh yes! Click on the return .xls, .whatever file and it opens as EIO. Edit, convert and post again.

You also have a Navigation pane that remembers your last work and you can click directly on the document you want to edit now. You also have a Macro, Science and Math editor. You can edit and extend the last two with your own images and stuff. Macro Ed goes without saying.

CutePDFWriter prints pdf - even just - pages like a printer from the dialog and FoxitReader opens the pages. Foxit's smaller and faster than Adobe.

It's written in Java and the site has support forums.

Come On, Jeremy! Add Evermore the way you did Softmaker. It's not an OOO clone. Download it and judge for yourself. Never heard of Softmaker, but I'm getting it!

Thanks for the idea. Feel better already. Softmaker is US$65 more expensive than Evermore and there is no 30-day free trial download, not even 15. And I thought I was out of line to ever suggest a non-free, proprietary suite. Come on, Jeremy, give it a fair shake.
