Am a contributor to OpenVAS and i must say it has exceeded my expectations and also not to mention the wide community which supports and contributes towards its development.
in doubt. nmap is a port scanner basically...
and well... i doubt if to choose tcpdump or wireshark: wireshark can interpret tcpdump's dumps in GUI, while tcpdump shows itself quite good on console. I'd voted for both but in this case, i'll vote for tcpdump anyways.
Wow! This was one of the few polls that I had to stop and think before I made my decision. There is some stuff competition here and it's very difficult to choose one.
