Audio Media Player Application of the Year

What do you use to listen to audio?

--jeremy

amani 01-08-2010 08:13 AM

kmplayer, but that is missing in the above list

craigevil 01-08-2010 12:03 PM

shell-fm and moc

jimmy page 01-08-2010 12:04 PM

rhythmbox mostly

MrCode 01-08-2010 01:20 PM

I use Totem for music (I know, I'm weird), but it's not in this list...

damgar 01-08-2010 07:16 PM

I love amarok. It's not perfect but, then again, neither am I. Maybe we were just meant for each other!

dreamwalking 01-09-2010 04:57 AM

Alsaplayer (not in the list)

spacegypsy 01-09-2010 07:44 AM

Songbird for me this year

pielas 01-09-2010 11:25 AM

I use mosty mplayer

gotfw 01-10-2010 04:01 AM

I use is Rhythmbox because its bundled with default OpenSolaris Gnome desktop and I'm too busy/lazy to compile MPD and Sonata. I've got Sonata on all the Debian workstations, however, so that gets the vote. Minimalist, elegant, and gets the job done.

MPD should perhaps be on the list since it is what actually is playing the tunes whereas things like Sonata are merely front end gui? Hmm... tough call....

MPD is _very_lightweight, and handles HUGE collections w/o batting an eye. Also does not require a million and one gstreamer plugins since it's not gstreamer based - hence a BIG benefit is that MPD plays continuous track music such as classical, trance, progressive, etc. w/o inserting "gap" in between tracks that should otherwise flow seamlessly one into the next. All gstreamer based apps are thus necessarily horribly broken in this regard and the enforced break between tracks is VERY disruptive to the listening experience. So if you like trance and appreciate lightweight player that is easily controlled from command line check out MPD. If you also want/need a gui then add Sonata as front end.

Hope this helps fellow EDM and classical music enthusiasts.

thingymebob 01-11-2010 12:07 PM

Banshee just because playlist generator is so cool

yngwin 01-11-2010 10:21 PM

MPD obviously. Why isn't this on the list??? I chose Sonata, altho I don't use it anymore. ncmpcpp and QMPDclient are my favorite front-ends.

Mark7 01-12-2010 12:44 AM

Decibel audio player does what I need.

huwnet 01-12-2010 04:23 AM

Rhythmbox. Has everything I need
  • Plays all my music
  • Supports Last.fm
  • Auto-adds music to my library when I put it into my music folder
  • Play Queue

The only disappointment is that the gapless playback seems to be buggy, however I think this is actually an underlying bug in Gstreamer (or perhaps even pulseaudio)

I've been meaning to try out MPD too, but when I last looked it seemed to want network support enabled on pulseaudio

mjjzf 01-12-2010 11:51 AM

I quite like Audacious and Exaile, but it struck me that VLC does everything I use anyway, so now I just do that. One app for several purposes.
My vote does go to Audacious this time, for being a snappy app.

JMJ_coder 01-12-2010 04:02 PM

I second that.

jeremy 01-12-2010 06:21 PM

Decibel Audio Player has been added.

Samotnik 01-12-2010 06:35 PM

Where is mpd ? (not equal to gmpc)

jeremy 01-12-2010 06:40 PM

After further consideration, MPD has been added.

portamenteff 01-13-2010 09:39 AM

banshee. it's my podcatcher, playlist manager, live stream player

raju.mopidevi 01-13-2010 08:41 PM

I like global shortcuts of amarok.... easy way of using !

tommcd 01-14-2010 07:35 AM

I mostly use MPlayer right from the terminal for playing my music. Lately though I have been very impressed with Exaile. It has all the features of Amarok or Rhythmbox, but it runs much lighter and uses fewer resources than either of them. Exaile would be my choice for a full featured music player.

quanta 01-19-2010 08:55 PM

Voted for Amarok because I like some features: tree style browsing, easy to drag and drop, easy to search... but the current version is lack of turn the volume slow down feature when exit.

DoogieHowser 01-19-2010 09:12 PM

I like amarok, but I don't really like the new version of it.

mecelec415 01-20-2010 12:20 AM

i use VLC for everything movies music

Andrewspriggs 01-20-2010 12:22 AM

Rhythmbox over here. used to be more for amarok, but, I dunno...just fell away

anticapitalista 01-20-2010 08:56 AM

Why no moc?

I used to use mpd/ncmpc most of the time, but switched to moc.

I still use xmms (IMO it still produces the best sound), alsaplayer is ok, and I can't stand amarok.

jeremy 01-20-2010 09:30 AM

MOC has been added.

stuartz 01-20-2010 11:25 AM

VLC

the1sephiroth 01-20-2010 12:04 PM

This will be the first year that I vote for anything besides amarok. I'm feeling the love for songbird now

raju.mopidevi 01-20-2010 05:40 PM

I got a problem with Amarok, it allowed me to put only a limited no of songs in playlist.
still i like it.

Peepaw07 01-20-2010 06:20 PM

I use mplayer with smplayer front end, neither of which is on the list.

Mplayer is in the video player's list. SMplayer not listed any where.

jjthomas 01-21-2010 04:51 AM

i don't like the new versions of either amarok, nor XMMS. Amarok 1.2 and XMMS 1 still rock.

saltyp 01-21-2010 05:17 AM

Yeah I'm with a few others. Use VLC on all machines for both audio and video playback. Including windows boxes. I'm not a fan of Media Library Management that seemingly does not work properly. I'd rather just point and play rather than spend 10-100 minutes trying to find out why one of 28792 tracks is not showing up in the library. And that goes for Itunes and windows Media Player as well...both crap. VLC FTW. So not voting on this one.

thiemster 01-21-2010 03:59 PM

The 1.x line for amarok was a ton better than the 2.x line, so I'll have to go with songbird (even though I have an iPod touch and have to resort to using iTunes in windows)

Cityscape 01-21-2010 04:06 PM

Please add?

What about RealPlayer?
Please add it.

sswam 01-22-2010 03:14 AM

mplayer ftw

Me too, since it actually supports pretty much every format of audio and video, and works well enough. So, please add mplayer :)

r1d3r 01-23-2010 12:59 AM

Banshee

honeybadger 01-23-2010 08:34 AM

mplayer *all* the time - but not on this list :(

Count Zero 01-27-2010 11:54 AM

I use gmusicbrowser but that's not in the list. How about adding it?

jeremy 01-27-2010 01:38 PM

gmusicbrowser has been added.

And it got my vote. Thanks. It's fairly unknown but I'd say it's the best thing since sliced bread.

Stoy 01-28-2010 02:48 AM

I mainly use MOC, but sometimes I use Rythmbox, when I don't feel like navigating my huge music library which has a VERY disorganizing folder layout.

Niniel 01-28-2010 08:15 AM

Exaile is nice, although it still needs some work.

oneforall 01-29-2010 07:32 PM

xmms and mplayer
This what i hate about votes when you like something equally .

Thanks for mentioning ncmpcpp. I wasn't familiar with it. I've yet to take for a test drive but it looks very good.

Hey Jeremy- I voted Sonata before MPD was added. Feel free to change my vote to MPD if it's not too much trouble.
