You guys that are all saying audacity but have you tried linux multi media studio (lmms) yet?! it is about the equivalent of pro tools 8 if not better! audacity is a fun toy that is so simple my grandmother could use which is great for most people! but lmms is the real deal! I am a music tech student and I use lmms for most of my projects.

Ardour!!
Been doing music production since '96 & my favorite DAW used to be Reason. Years ago, I found Ardour & have never gone back. Very mature, professional product that in my opinion is better than Pro Tools & Reason and is open source to boot! Doesnt get much better than that.
Audacity just looks cartoony & not very profesh. LMMS is #2 in my book.
TerminatorX is a good audio synthesizer which lets you "scratch" (& I use & love this program just for that!) but it's not audio *authoring* software.
I like Audacity(can use jacks or not). Ardour and rosegarden only work with jacks and are good if thats all you plan to do (more like a pc for just them and nothing else)
I've be meaning to look at LMMS , But I need to check and see if its a jacks only too app)

Thanks for pointing this out. I just checked it out briefly and it looks pretty cool.

LMMS looks great if you are producing music with your computer, but when you need something simple to just record from records or audio tapes and to edit the noise out and refine old 78s, then Audacity or a similar application is really all you need.
So it really depends on what you are doing and what your needs are, as to which application you use.

Yup. Choosing between Audacity, Ardour or Hydrogen seems blasphemy Guess these are broad categories, so I'm going for the app that really made the biggest impression, constantly!
