FireStarter. i never saw a simpler firewall tool until it.
ClamAV is great and fun, too: useful to laugh at your Windows friends after lending them your USB stick and scan it with ClamAV afterwards, on your Linux box

There are couple of things I use regularly, voted Nmap in the end. 2008 was huge for them with a lot of things going on.

How much extra work would it be to ensure that all nominees are link[s|ed]? Having done it for one category, I appreciate the effort I am requesting, but I think the benefits would be worth it.

Besides letting us support our favorites, one of the great things about these polls is introducing us to new software:

by listing the names,
by the posts of those who give thoughtful reasons for their votes,
&, if I have my way, by providing easy access to further info.

In compiling the links in post #14 I discovered that, at least for this category, freshmeat.net is more comprehensive than the Wikipedia, & more uniform in presentation than the home pages. I recommend that the links be to:

Can't Really Choose Just One, Cos I Use Quite A Few Of Them Together To Protect Myself, Like Firestarter To Block All Incoming, Nmap To Check Whats Open And What Information People Can Get About My Machine, And Snort To Take Note Of Anything. But I'll Put Nmap Seen As I'm A Big Fan

Maybe its a stretch to have "common sense" as an application, but just maybe its an application of the brain. Ok - time for me to get some sleep.

OSSEC.net is a handy application for the defensive side of things and if you had to pick an offensive tool that is doing some amazing things its got to be Metasploit.
