mplayer classifies itself as "A movie player for Linux". Yes, it can play audio, but it's not suited to be in the audio player of the year poll.

ahh.. its really the only thing I use to listen to audio

I guess out of this list I would choose xmms then..

I don't use the media library applications - for two reasons:
1) I get a lot of sound files in for a short time and then erase them again. Makes no sense to waste resources updating the library constantly.
2) A lot of people - with podcasts and audiobooks (especially from the otherwise excellent PodioBooks.com) do the file tagging extremely poorly, and the media library shows these files with unknown authors and authors with variations in the spelling and naming.

I voted exaile since I'm using it, but I've also used and liked mpd/sonata in the past. I guess I only changed because I distro hop a lot and mpd is sometimes a pain to set up.

xmms still produces the best sound output on my box, but I like using mpd with ncmpc

What for those who choose mpg321 over mpg123?

And no vorbis? I use ogg123 as much as mpg321, depending on the file type.

Used Amarok for awhile, still can't find a decent EQ for it without jumping through a bunch of hoops a la LADSPA, JACK, etc.
Ergo, back to XMMS...I hear they actually updated it a year or so ago.
