Same as last year...Cross Linux from Scratch.

My 3 fave distros are Mandriva, SUSE, and Debian. But I use them each for different purposes. For example, I use Mandriva as a Windows replacement desktop - so multimedia, games, music, fun stuff, homework. I use it on both my desktop and my laptop (for school). I use SUSE as a Windows workstation replacement - using it for all work and no play. Lastly, Debian, for me anyways, is a great workstation OS, but no necessarily to replace a Windows box.
I haven't really experimented with Linux as a server OS too much yet. However I would be interested in hearing why people use particular distros. |
I think Sabayon should be listed because it gives users a taste what Gentoo Linux does and how simple it is to use.

OpenSUSE was looking promising, but their 11.0 release was a disaster with the KDE4 desktop. It should not even had been a distribution release. 11.1 at least had a KDE3 option, but will not continue to release with KDE3 in the future.:( I am currently using OpenSUSE with the Gnome desktop because KDE4 is still buggy....unbelievable!
The only windows program I continue to use is MS Publisher for a newsletter I am the editor for. Otherwise, Debian does it ALL! No problems, not even a burp from the current Lenny release. It is more difficult to install and configure than Mepis, Ubuntu, Parsix, Pardus, but the others just have too many problems even installing stable release packages. D E B I A N Lenny ALL THE WAY :p |

I followed the KDE4 development and it looked interesting and it looked promising but then I had the opportunity of using it in Mandriva 2008 and I was left quite unimpressed so I don't think it's just openSUSE. But I've also heard from one of the Mandriva mailing lists that KDE4.0 was meant more for developers and not end users. I've also tried KDE4.1 in Mandriva 2009 and that has left me with the same impression.

fedora is the best

Slackware!

Slackware all the way, baby. :)

Ok, Dreamlinux is ranked number 8 on distrowatch for the last 12 months.
|
One of my favorites never make the list but its a lean mean distro machine...Sourcemage, but other than that, I go with Debian.

No antiX?
Great for old and new boxes. |
Well, over the history, I would say Debian, but this year, the most dynamic and promising distro is clearly Linux Mint... Ubuntu might win in a landslide, but Mint is Ubuntu done right...
-AntiX ? I like the idea, but I am not too keen on Mepis... If it was based on pure Debian, I'd enjoy it better... |
I have been more than happy with Ubuntu. OpenSUSE 11 wasn't bad either and Fedora's definitely not for desktop!
