Alas I have to use an old Debian sarge here (online), so no Thunar possible, whilst my new Debian box is offline and elsewhere. I see I got Thunar 0.4.0 on my USB stick, from the f'n http://packages.debian.org/ and so not really tested 0.9.0 ... New 0.9.0 now downloaded, hope to have no f'n dependency broken, and will try it tonight.

Xsel is another program similar to xclip that I have used with some programs for the same purpose.

Sorry, nope, tarballs not installable with finite effort...

configure of exo-0.3.4 fails on glib:
"checking for glib-2.0 >= 2.6.4... not found"
I got /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.1400.1 and /usr/lib/libglibmm-2.4.so.1.0.24, plus /usr/lib/libglib-1.2.so.0.0.10 (for the only serious WM, Fvwm2).
Is it the lib name (resp. linked standard aliases) or the double versions that confuses config? (I tried a linked alias in an extra directory and ./configure GLIB_LIBS=/usr/lib/fcknGlib2/)

Neither is the f'n thunar_0.9.0-2~bpo40+2_i386.deb package installable due to missing xfce libs on my offline f'n ubuntu box.
That hints that thunar is no universal file manager, but a xfce gadget (thus requires superfluous junk to carry around and doubles the risk of one day breaking).

BTW, I keep that box offline to tinker/assemble an offline maintainable system, for I am living/travelling far outside civilization.
N.B.: A system that is not maintainable offline (via USB stick etc.) is NOT internets capable, i.e. not net-fail/bottleneck safe! (E.g. ubuntu is disqualified)

That lib mess is one major reason to write my own file manager "TkDesk2" in a cross-platform lib independent script language... My first part-prototype file list in Tcl/Tk outperforms the f'n konqueror. In about a year I might present TkDesk2 to the world.

I never said Thunar was incredibly universal. It needs GTK and everything that needs GTK/QT needs some library work. You're not forced to deal with it if you find making your own tools easier : ).

xubuntu,xfce and Thunar are my favourite OS,Desktop Environment & File manager respectively

i like Thunar, ive been using it for a few months, but its still got (imo) some problems with a few features, copy/paste files between different Thunar instances doesnt seem to work, which is a feature i rely heavily on. a few other problems too, but still quite good.

Just tried the PCMan File Manager for the first time, and must say I'm quite impressed!
Sure, the feature set is a bit limited compared to most well known FMs out there, but all that is there has been exceptionally well thought out, IMO.

Its also the best performing gtk2 based FM I've ever seen (damn, I had just about given up the hope of seeing a well performing gtk2 FM already). If the development for this keeps going it could well become a real workhorse of a file manager.
