I had to vote for KDE this year. Gnome is getting slower and buggier every year. I am not sure what is going on with the developers. KDE4 looks very promissing as well.
I see you described as a Guru, but your statement is not that what I could hear from a "Guru" ...
If you are used to Ubuntu surely you'll find an ugly, slow and buggier Gnome (that tells a lot of Ubuntu quality not of Gnome's quality).
You'll see, I agree with you if you are talking about Ubuntu or FreeBSD perhaps. Though, my experience is the opposite from Gentoo and my mother PCLinuxOS install. There, I find a very, very reliable and faster Gnome. Indeed, if I chosen Gnome for my mother then I should have heavy reasons...
I am new to Linux, but I have had a lot of head aches and lost sleep trying out PCLinuxOS and Ubuntu. I like several things in PCLinux, but I am settling in on Ubuntu. I just have to finally figure out how to install third party packages. My efforts seamed to make OS unstable, but no broken pacakes reported. I just want to pull the plug on Windows (period.)

Well, please, review your statement.
Personally, I've had no problems with Gnome or Ubuntu. They work perfectly together. I can't say I have anything against KDE or XFCE, except the fact that I started with Gnome and I know where to find everything, including all the desktop settings. And appearance is a moot point, it can also be changed.
In my opinion the best Desktop Environment is the one that gives you what you want when you needit, and for me is Gnome, simple and quick, i can customize it how i want, anyway if you now how to use Linux (advanced user) means that you now how to use the command line, for an average user Xfce is enough, KDE for me looks better form first install, but I can make Gnome look better and is very stable, has all the software that I need, and in Firefox/Epiphany i can use the Citrix Metaframe, Lotus Notes web interface and on konqueror it doesn't work (or i didn't manage to make it work). http://us.f6.yahoofs.com/blog/44005f...QRFGIBcgJeSRnE

A few months ago I abandoned KDE 3.5 and switched to Gnome, but after openSUSE 11.1 enforced Gnome 2.24 on me (with a login manager that lacks some really nice options and a rewritten sessions manager that doesn't restore my windows from last time) I switched to KDE 4.2. It's still not perfect, but the guys are trying hard And yeah, Konqui is kinda cute.
