I only recently started using PostgreSQL, and this is my first time working with databases. I already have working triggers and functions in my schema. The documentation may need some improvement, but it was good enough for me to figure some things out on my own.
Easy to install on Debian and smoothly integrated into powerful web apps like phpMyAdmin, Gallery2, wikimedia, phpBB, and so on. I have been using MySQL for years and never had a problem with. It just works.
mysql is becoming a standard worldwide
probably because java has caused more problems to oracle than benefits
and php is definitivelly helping mysql and postgres market share
