Shell of the Year

Could be the last year for this poll, if we have another 90% winner.

This forum is for the 2007 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards.
You can now vote for your favorite products of 2006.
Do these need to be bumped +1 year? I don't remember my '06 favorites. ;)

Might be kind of silly, but you could just declare bash the winner and have a second place poll. The results might well be different than just whoever finishes up in second against bash. A ksh vs. zsh (etc) poll. I'd probably vote for ksh if I didn't have bash. Such a poll might at least encourage experimentation whereas doing away with it might just seem like sweeping the command line under the carpet. (I know that's not at all the situation, I'm just saying a shell of the year seems like a necessary category.)

And I don't use it but that plan9-ish 'rc' shell or whatever it is could be on there.

I've learned an awsome lot about bash last year. Simple and effective. And I concur, even if we know who will be the winner, why cancel the poll. It's just as intresting to see the developments of other contestants.

bash still works very well

jlgreer1 01-04-2008 12:53 PM

While bash is the default - tried and true, I found zsh while using grml. It has a number of very hand features.

I think zsh is a great power shell. Bash has its rightful place as the default shell and earned my vote as the shell to use. I use the bash shell well over 95% of the time, perhaps 99%+.

I've been scripting with ksh latley...but bash is still my fave. I voted for ksh though...just to mix things up a little

Tinkster 01-07-2008 01:29 PM

Heh. I'd happily forget about (k)sh if it wasn't for the silly limitations
I have to put up with in Solaris ;}

Bash all the way...

mocqueanh 01-08-2008 03:40 AM

Im linux newbie, so only know bash.
Vote fot it

taylor_venable 01-08-2008 10:32 AM

Let's go, TENEX C Shell!! I feel bad for you, because nobody votes for you. But I like you because I use you on my BSD boxen for historical feelings. Still, it has been well observed that you should never script in C shell.

cmd :) j/k ... bash

entz 01-10-2008 11:14 PM

I think we should make a poll about whether this poll is an outrage or not :p hehhehee

As if the choice wouldn't be known from the start.

C'mon let's bash the rest of those wannabie shells !

P.S i love democracy nonetheless lol

Please don't cancel this poll. Even though Bash will more than likely win, I enjoy reading other peoples comments on why they choose something other than Bash. Who knows, if I read the right comment, I could switch. I have been looking at Ksh a little because of anothers comments.
