Network Security Application of the Year
We broke Security Application of the Year into Network and Host this year (yes, some are borderline).

Really should include psad in this list, there's a few other tools as well that might qualify to replace some of the borderline listed above:
http://www.cipherdyne.com/ |
another missing
I don't use it, but I think kmyfirewall (homepage) is worth adding to this list. It can be used both by pros (graphical iptables tool) and users (simple click-and-use tool). Thanks.
|
you miss those two for OS fingerprinting:
(active) sinfp: http://www.gomor.org/cgi-bin/sinfp.pl (passive) p0f: http://freshmeat.net/projects/p0f/ |
What about smoothwall - http://www.smoothwall.org
|
Or its fork IPCop, or perhaps m0n0wall (BSD based), or any of the other make-a-boat-anchor-into-a-perimeter-firewall-appliance distros.
|
My vote is for psad, not on the list.
|
i didnt see pf sense either. but its not really an app its more of a distro
|
might as well add ettercap and add a whole new poll for the firewall distros and routers (smoothwall, ipcop, pfsense, linksys wrt54gl, monowall, ect)

I'll throw in another plug for IPCop.
Although perhaps it is better considered a distribution? |
I dont know if this is the right place to post this, but Avast! is my trusted anti-virus. However, the only thing it has found on my system are windows viruses. :D
|
My network is protected by pf (the OpenBSD PacketFilter), though a lot of these like Wireshark and ClamAv, are really good tools as well.
|
Shorewall. Complex configs made easy from the command line.
pfsense is great too, quick install, noob friendly. |
I use Slax 0.6 pre-release with Clam, Klam and updated database package I made myself.
Ever since I scan my customer's PCs offline and hit more positives than with pro tools. the caveat is I have to erase manually... With the trends or infection rates and frequencies, i believe that Clam project deserves more public exposure and support up until the point the all known malware-receptive OS becomes insignificant part of the market. My vote goes to Clam this year. Anti viral companies, I f You red this - make more free editions (trade feed back for support) - or perish. |

I vote for IPCop, not on the list. Live it...Learn it...Love it.

Netwox (Formerly lcrzoex)
Please add Netwox, as it is certainly a comprehensive security tool.
Thanks. |
My vote is for Firestarter, because it works and is really user friendly.
|
I voted for Firestarter because it's easy and makes sharing the internet connection a matter of a few clicks instead of manually setting up masquerading. Adding other iptables rules and viewing logs and status is also very easy using Firestarter. I think it's a good gui, as it requires no knowledge of iptables to work so anyone who ever used a personal firewall on the darkside can quickly understand it and have iptables configured adequately for a home desktop or laptop in a few minutes. It also doesn't stop you setting iptables rules manually as well if you prefer.
