Multimedia Utility of the Year

Another poll where many of the nominees are not directly comparable.

vermaden 01-01-2008 02:03 PM

missed: mencoder (from mplayer)

jeremy 01-01-2008 08:15 PM

mencoder is in the video authoring poll.

It can be used for the same purpose as DVD::RIP so ...

Electro 01-03-2008 05:50 AM

K3b and Gnomebaker are CD and DVD writing programs.

Freevo and MythTV are personal video recorder projects.

Others again do belong to be in this poll. Do you know what multimedia programs are.

No it is not. It is a multimedia utility.

Where is the heck is transcode, ffmpeg, and GStreamer.

jeremy 01-03-2008 08:07 AM

Electro, you've posted similar feedback in multiple polls. We realize that in many cases the nominees are not directly comparable. If we broke it out to the granularity some people are asking for we'd have literally a thousand polls. We try to strike a balance when deciding on the categories. Some single polls have been broken into as many as four distinct polls. A couple years ago we did have spreadsheet, word processor, etc. and is did not generate enough interest.

I forgot about ffmpeg, but along with mencoder it should be included as it is also widely user for DVD ripping.

therumble 01-03-2008 04:26 PM

What about DeVeDe?

landroni 01-03-2008 04:50 PM

I chose GnomeBaker, but OGMRip is missing. Compared to AcidRip or DVD::Rip, at least, it does an excellent job and is much more versatile (for example, converts a DVD to H.264 and Ogg Vorbis, and puts everything into a Matroska container).

Brasero is missing...

JLP 01-04-2008 09:46 AM

Another poll with hard decision. I use many from the list a lot, especially K3b and digiKam, So The final vote goes to the one I use more time: digiKam.

marciobarbalho 01-04-2008 09:53 AM

k3b is the best cd-burner ever

Storm16 01-04-2008 10:43 AM

How about LinuxMCE. It uses MythTV, however it is so much more...

masinick 01-04-2008 12:36 PM

I use k3b a lot

I do a lot of distro testing so I burn a lot of CDs and DVDs. K3b handles the job effortlessly and takes one level of setup and configuration right out of the equation, enabling me to spend less time configuring and more time testing. K3b has always done what I needed it to do automatically.

jlgreer1 01-04-2008 12:46 PM

It was tough to choose between K3B and Digikam. I regularly use k3b to record cd and dvd disks.

I finally went with digikam since it even supports my very old Olympus camera that uses an obsolete file storage scheme.

I guess of those in the poll, ffmpeg.
But brasero is a very good cd/dvd burner.

Chargh 01-04-2008 02:51 PM

I burn with nautilus

Alien_Hominid 01-05-2008 03:05 AM

IMO, CD/DVD burners shouldn't be there (sep poll is needed).

Such tools as rippers, encoders, tag editors, splitters should be there. I voted for ffmpeg but I think flac encoder should be an option too.

therumble 01-06-2008 07:30 AM

I'm still holding out for DeVeDe or Brasero.

jsp3 01-12-2008 02:25 PM

Nautilus CD Burner

I've enjoyed the simplicity of burning CD's from Nautilus; I haven't needed to use any other burner for a long time now.

Eternal_Newbie 01-13-2008 08:29 AM

I vote for mencoder.

gros777 01-15-2008 10:30 AM

gros777 01-15-2008 10:38 AM

k3b is always the best choice to burn your cd and dvd, but digikam take me off from window$ almost complet....then digikam rules...

And that does make voting just a little daunting, since I use both F-Spot and GnomeBaker for their very different intended purposes. Just my:twocents:

Cheers

sakura_san 01-17-2008 12:44 AM

k3b is wonderful! who needs another program existing this one?! I love K3b.

munkie_poo 01-20-2008 09:23 PM

Theres a lot of great apps in that list, but I abuse k3b. Makes me wonder why people pay good money for nero and the likes...

Rambo_Tribble 01-31-2008 11:58 PM

A suggestion

K9Copy is an excellent multimedia utility, worthy of inclusion in the list of candidates.

Takla 02-01-2008 04:02 AM

I voted for F-Spot. The latest versions 0.4.* are hugely better than the 0.3.* versions. The tagging and searching is brilliant, it integrates absolutely beautifully with Gimp, UFRaw and other external tools such as Photo Grid Print, PhotoPrint, Evolution, Gthumb and so on and has a good set of export tools (flickr, picasaweb, facebook etc) and new tools for RAW+JPEG merging. The metadata browsing, tagging and search is so good that I no longer feel I'm missing out on anything compared with all those "pro" workflow tools available on the dark side. But I don't think it belongs in the same category as K3b or acidrip, it should be in with the graphics tools, not multimedia. You can't play music or movies with F-Spot, only manage/edit photos.

sriram_16a 02-01-2008 05:16 AM

How about adding showfoto?

quep_fly 02-01-2008 09:54 PM

Soundjuicer?

Would soundjuicer fit here?

Beat grip by far - it seems to encode a cd to ogg format as fast as it can read it. (rather than first ripping and then encoding).

4TElevn 02-05-2008 09:21 PM

Voted for K3B, but Digikam has been very good to me.

Taipou 02-12-2008 08:12 AM

K3b is my favorite CD/DVD authoring application. Audacity would have been my choice for favorite Multimedia Utility, though. It's fast, easy and the 1.3.4 preview release has FLAC support. Awesome :)

wificraig 02-14-2008 08:46 AM

Hmmmmmmmmm

I voted for K3b, but if it were up there, I would have voted for k9copy. I'm using it now for all my DVD burning.

jasohl 02-20-2008 11:27 PM

K3b, I guess its just what i use the most from the list. others are good too. but don't use them that often.
