as for pcmanfm, well i just spent 1 and a half hours trying to install it. the website says 'simple and easy to use'.
not if getting the thing and all its dependancies installed is anything to go by.

heaven for me would be a *really* simple file manager in gtk1 or 2 (preferably 1), im talking 1 window pane listing the files in that dir. right-click on a file brings up a customizable context menu for you to run your own commands on that file.

anyone know something like this?
If you don't mind a KDE/Qt one, Dolphin would do that. Maybe Nautilus (GNOME) would fill.

thunar can do this with its custom actions.

emelfm2 can do this (it can run two panes or one) and is endlessly customisable with your own commands as well as a very good set of defaults.

there is also emelfm if you prefer gtk to gtk2

Seriously I've looked at it and it just seems confusing ... unless you're administering via ssh why use curses interface - Krusader or something seems better to me.

Krusader. It's as close to Total Commander as you can get without directly porting the code (if only he would...).

Wink PCmanfm

I use and like pcmanfm every day. Second most used is Emelfm which is much more than a file manager. Third and least used but always available is Roxfiler.
Since pcmanfm was not listed emelfm got the nod by default.

I've tried thnunar and others and did not like them.

So pcmanfm is not maintained? So no one is adding new bugs er I mean features. Great. Don't fix what aint broken.

Talking Total Commander

Krusader is nice, but by far not as good as Total Commander on the Other OS. But, of course that will only be a matter of time?

Krusader. Since I use Total Commander in Windows world this is the best alternative for get around in Linux.

ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/utils/file/managers/

check out sfm - I can't remember how customizable it was and I'm not even sure that's the right app but, if it is, it sounds like what you want.

As far as pcmanfm, I compiled it on slack with no problems - I think I had to build gamin or some such for it but that was about it. However, I wasn't particularly impressed by it.

I tend to use the command line, mc, and rox interchangeably. Whichever's more suited to whatever I'm doing.

Thumbs down None!

The NONE option is missing.

Recently I've tested most of the listed filemanagers, and found ALL are missing a basic feature that I'm used to use very often with TkDesk:

Get the pathed filename into the X selection. I have to work with many many files each day, opening them in diverse apps (sometimes started from console), so it can save a lot of clicke-clacke and typo-typing when you have the pathed filname in the X selection. Perhaps I'm one of the last who makes frequent use of the middle mouse button (=Paste), for I still maintain a mouse not broken by the wheel.

MOST of the listed filemangers are just more or less gilded crap. Since the last 20 years there has been no progress in computering except for them shiny bells and whistles. Progressive microsoftification of Linux instead.

I would advocate the good old TkDesk, however it meanwhile got severe dementia: crashing now and then and not catching the drag-o file at first click.

So, I have decided to write my own filemanager (in pure Tcl/Tk) ...

Sounds hilarious, but collecting old mice to transplant buttons for worn out buttons is at least as hilarious. Looks it's impossible to get a mouse without that hilariously shtoopid wheel-on-button construct. -- But I INSIST in working effectively, thus insist in having non-crappy tools.

BTW, almost all modern window managers are also crap. Gnome/KDE are just an n-fold microsofty 1-window system. Fvwm2 could rock, but the Pager is suboptimal.

That seemed like an interesting idea to me and I figured Thunar's actions should suffice. I did a little search and found a program called xclip that allows to add text to X's clipboard from CLI. Install that and add the following Thunar custom action:
Code:
echo "%f" | xclip -d "localhost$DISPLAY"
Worked exellently for me : ).
