I dislike Ubuntu for a number of reasons
1. Shuttleworth is avoiding taxes by head quartering form the Ilse of Man. If a man can afford to blast himself into space he can pay British Taxes.
2. I dislike Canonical Business tactics.
3. Ubuntu is to User Friendly which I believe is the Anti-Christ.
4. Shuttleworth is the marketer not a nerd.
5. Shuttleworth stole coders from a worthy project (Debian) to work on Ubuntu.
6. I consider the biggest threat to Free Software not Apple or Microsoft but Canonical (Also Canonical is hard to pronounce!).
7. I read that Canonical is bowing down to Microsoft patent claims.

Distributions I like are: Fedora, CentOS, Debian, and to a lesser extant (Due to being corporate) Mandriva, RHEL, and Slackware. I like Fedora best but that is because I used to use Red Hat.

Distributions I will never use include: Ubuntu, Suse, Linspire, and Xandros. As well as any others that piss me off.

Interesting results in the posting department. I checked and saw that only two people have posted support for Ubuntu. Many others have posted in support for Slackware, Debian, and Fedora. As well as more minor distros such as CentOS (A very fine system indeed). I can not wait to see the poll results.

You have a very narrowed view of things, for example: "Ubuntu is to User Friendly which I believe is the Anti-Christ". By that thought, why does an OS has to be hard to use to be good? Say, you can't make a lasagna yourself, so what is wrong buying one that you can do on your microwave without going through all the trouble of learning how to do it? And what about the average user who could care less about how an OS works? He just need a computer to surf and chat, not to hack the crap out of it to get his mouse working...

"Shuttleworth stole coders from a worthy project (Debian) to work on Ubuntu."

How can you "steal" open-sourced code, freely available to modify by anyone? By that thought, you should not be able to use (or like) Mandriva, because back in the Mandrake years, it "stole" code from Redhat. But maybe since it does not "steal" code from Redhat anymore, than it is okey?

You also like Fedora the best because you are used to Redhat, even though you don't personally like corporated distributions. However, Redhat was (perhaps still is), the biggest and most know corporate Linux distributions of all times.

If I'd think like you, I'd not use Linux at all, because I personally dislike Linus Torvalds. Nor I would use ReiserFS, because the creator of that file system was charged with murder of his own wife.

I realize that everybody is entitled to have their own opinions, but yours, sound very very flawed (logically) to me on every level.

Best Desktop distro

I vote in this post for archlinux which your voting scheme has left out.

It has the finest forums and the best package manager in linux, pacman.

Linux Mint

How you can put up Mepis, a fine distro, and leave off Linux Mint is beyond me.

I tried the new version of PC-LOS, btw, "mini-me", and it had the WORST wireless support of any distro I've tried for my BCM43xx card.

Puppy Linux is one of the best, and certainly had the best wireless support for me of any distro I tried.

Wolvix was pretty good. Sidux not as good.

Mandriva didn't work for me. Suse didn't work for me, though I actually own a copy and have been running it (when it works) since way before the 10's.

But, if you read DistroWatch, Linux Mint is obviously one of the big distro stories of 2007, zooming right up to being a popular distro because of how well it works. It certainly works great for me.

Too bad you guys were asleep as far as Linux Mint is concerned. I'd love to see your explanation of why it was ineligible.

I was also impressed by Geubuntu, but unfortunately it had too many bugs, despite its beauty.

I agree with you , Good Riddance 98 seems to be an extremist.

However it's true that Ubuntu, while being a nice and user friendly Linux distribution, is mostly a commercial project even if it claims to be philanthropic. Ubuntu is far away from the original GNU/Linux spirit imho, like Redhat, Mandriva, and a few others as well... Of course it doesn't matter as long as the distribution is stable and easy to use, and as far as I know it is! ... but MS Windows XP is also relatively stable and easy to use

btw : what's the difference between Linux Mint and Ubuntu ?
