NMAP All the way. Always has been always will be. I will say Ethereal/WireShark is a close second but as fas as security is overall concerned, NMAP wins out. I liek the birds eye view of whats going on and what is open

Firestarter is my choice. It's a user-friendly GUI for configuring your firewall, and includes complete control over inbound and outbound traffic; full support for IPv6, DHCP, & ICS; ICMP & ToS filtering; options on how to drop packets, and a real-time traffic monitor.

I've found no need to try anything else.

Nmap just because its the good old app, you can never go wrong with good old nmap, though I like wireshark alot as well...

Nmap is not just a good old tool. It's mature, it's efficient and it allows advanced functions. From version 4.21ALPHA4 Nmap supports scripting. Which makes it more lethal The scripting language used is a variant of Lua which is also used in many places including World of Warcraft. Check out the Nmap site for more info about Nmap and NSE (Nmap Scripting Engine)
