KDE by far. Fast, and looks good. Also has the best apps, IMO.

I don't know how anyone can say Kde is getting better.

My experience:

1. With the nVidia driver, dialogue windows were too big and could not be re-sized. With Vesa, the font sizes were wrong.
2. Konqueror is still better than Nautilus and Thunar by a long way but it persistently forgets certain file associations.
3. Kate can no longer be set to run only one instance (except by hacking) and its "recent files" list seems to contain random selections of files opened from whenever.

I still have Kde for the applications but even they run better on Xfce.

we need to send some GNOME distros to KDE fanboys,may be KDE fanboys,some of them atleast will change to the Best Desktop Environment of All Time both ethically and pracitcally GNOME.GNOME-2.16 really rocks on Ubuntu and Debian Etch+sid+experimental.

Many, if not most, KDE users have tried also Gnome but choose KDE. Nothing wrong with that: people are different (thanks God they are!), and different people like different things. In Linux, people can choose what they need, prefer and like.

The way I see it, you get to comfortable using the same tools all the time. Where's the OPEN-ness in that? My distro of choice for that last 6 plus years has been SuSE (yeah, that spelling), so to paraphrase Samuel L. in Pulp Fiction: :"That pretty much makes me a KDE guy too."

Well, a year or so, I switched to Fedora Core 5, which put me in the Gnome camp. It was a little tough getting used to, but I survived. And while it doesn't have the Polish or Finnish accolades from Linus, it IS serviceable, and it allows me to see Linux from a different perspective, which I feel is to the Good. Open Source and Open Minded do go hand-in-hand.

That's the reason for my Vote.

I know that KDE is a huge drain on resources, but I like all the bells and whistles. If I am going all the way and using a full Desktop Enviroment, I want to splurge.

How can Gnome seriously compete? There are 4 things it does not have:

1. A simple reminder tool like KAlarm - runs well on Xfce, not on Gnome
2. A notebook like KJots. Ok, that might be in Gnome now.
3. A clipboard extension like Klipper.
4. A file manager with move/copy/link options like Konqueror, not to mention tabs and split window views.

Edit: the last report I saw concluded that Gnome is a worse drain on system resources than Kde.

Xfce all the way. It's fast, great for older hardware with no bloatware. The use of plugins for addons are great. I'm using version 4,4rc2 with no problems at all. Even when I'll upgrade my pc I'm still sticking with Xfce. I have really grown to love it.

I liked Gnome allthe time, but then I tried KDE for a while and liked it a lot, so this was Gnome year for me, but I think the last one.

Gnome did my KDE desktop in -> all icons stacked on top of each other, no readable fonts ... and I love Konqueror

Umm, what did you say about "...reasons given are mostly rationalisations"? Seconded ...

I started with Gnome Ubuntu breezy, I then started distro hopping, including dapper drake and Suse 10.1 gnome. I've now ended up with KDE and Debian etch, and I'm never going back to silly Gnome. Feel free to send me all the Gnome Distro's you want, it won't work.
