VLC takes the vote. Plays most of the media. Xine is cool too but i think its rather bloated and the interface is not that good. found some new names in the list. i think i got to try and see what the heck the are.

MPLAYER no doubt

I have done hell lot of stuff with mplayer..

mplayer rules!

I voted for mplayer, because I have it running on 3 machines with different distro's as the plug-in for Firefox, Opera & Konqueror. It seems to play everything once you get the right codecs installed. It even plays the stuff on the Council of Europe site, though they claim they can't support Linux for legal reasons!

It is a hard question though, as mplayer uses xine, and I mostly use Kaffeine for playing DVD's, and that also uses xine, so maybe I should have voted for xine. ;)

Happy New Year to all.

I actually have not used any these options... Since I don't normally watch video ;) Although I installed VLC yesterday to test out... so I voted for that one.

My favorite is mplayer.

VLC, is like universal or something. I download it and things just end up working. Nothing to say about other apps but VLC is just hardcore!

Jessii 01-02-2007 09:37 AM

VLC, hands down, has the best UI of all the media players I've tried. Every Windows user I've recommended it to fell in love as well.

LocoMojo 01-02-2007 09:42 AM

MPlayer...controls at the keyboard, not on the screen taking up real estate and distracting you from what you're watching.

Kaffien! gone from just another video player app. to a killer one

J_K9 01-02-2007 12:15 PM

I would've gone for VLC because I use it on multiple OSs, but I've chosen xine instead (even over mplayer) simply because it was the first functional Linux media player I encountered all those years ago :)

samael26 01-02-2007 12:54 PM

kaffeine, but if it doesn't play on it --> Mplayer is an option along with VLC

Phlosten 01-02-2007 04:31 PM

mplayer, because it just works. I have never been able to get Helix to play anything on my systems. Does it actually play video of some sort?

The Cello Fellow 01-02-2007 11:08 PM

MPlayer or VLC? Hmmm...

...I guess I'll go with MPlayer. I've used it longest, it's the one with the Firefox plugin installed and it plays most everything. I do use VLC too, mostly for DVD's and the streaming features. But, MPlayer is my favorite. :)

Samotnik 01-03-2007 01:47 AM

Can't imagine something such simple, useable and mighty as mplayer.

wait4you 01-03-2007 02:07 AM

I like kaffeine,I think it is faster that Mplayer and reaplyer.
