Video Media Player Application of the Year

A new category this year.

Can we have an option for RealPlayer please?

jeremy 12-30-2006 05:20 PM

I'd say Helix is the best representation of Real on Linux. If there is sufficient demand we can also add the traditional "Real" player, but I left it off since it's based on Helix.

I use gxine and mplayer but I do prefer gxine. It's just very simple to use and doesn't get in my way at all. Since gxine is based on xine, xine gets my vote.

Tortanick 12-31-2006 05:35 AM

VLC BABY!

I just couldn't live without being able to retranscode anything I can watch. Plus it can play almost everything.

Larry Webb 12-31-2006 05:48 AM

kaffeine and I must admit the only other one I have tried is Helix

puntjuh 12-31-2006 03:51 PM

VLC for me, though i must say i don't dislike mplayer. But VLC just rox if you ask me.

Hitboxx 12-31-2006 06:49 PM

Kaffeine yes. Mplayer is a close second.

FredGSanford 12-31-2006 11:24 PM

VLC is for me...and mplayer.

TruongAn 01-01-2007 05:42 AM

mplayer is the best for me, it play anything I have

Niko 01-01-2007 10:41 AM

Xine for simplicity, Mplayer for multi-videotype-support..

I'll flip a coin for which one I shall vote for..

Heads = xine
Tails = mplayer

and the result is..

TAILS.. Congratulation Mplayer, you got my vote!

JLP 01-01-2007 08:34 PM

KMplayer

This year I started using KMplayer. I like it because it is small and fast and the user interface gives as much room as possible to video. Too bad you don't have KMplayer on the list, so I voted for Kaffeine which I was using before KMplayer.

jag2000 01-01-2007 09:03 PM

Mplayer once you put all the codecs on it.

younker 01-02-2007 12:06 AM

In fact, I love kmplayer, but no option for it here.

fcaraballo 01-02-2007 03:09 AM

Voted for MPlayer.

prozac 01-02-2007 03:49 AM

VLC takes the vote. Plays most of the media. Xine is cool too but i think its rather bloated and the interface is not that good. found some new names in the list. i think i got to try and see what the heck the are.

anandbora 01-02-2007 04:19 AM

MPLAYER no doubt

I have done hell lot of stuff with mplayer..
and have saved a lot of money!!
u know Encoding and other kinda stuff..
my votes for Mplayer!!

sadiqdm 01-02-2007 04:19 AM

mplayer rules!

I voted for mplayer, because I have it running on 3 machines with different distro's as the plug-in for Firefox, Opera & Konqueror. It seems to play everything once you get the right codecs installed. It even plays the stuff on the Council of Europe site, though they claim they can't support Linux for legal reasons!

It is a hard question though, as mplayer uses xine, and I mostly use Kaffeine for playing DVD's, and that also uses xine, so maybe I should have voted for xine. ;)

Happy New Year to all.

diilbert 01-02-2007 05:27 AM

I actually have not used any these options... Since I don't normally watch video ;) Although I installed VLC yesterday to test out... so I voted for that one.

Zayar Win 01-02-2007 07:54 AM

My favorite is mplayer.

MFC 01-02-2007 08:06 AM

VLC, is like universal or something. I download it and things just end up working. Nothing to say about other apps but VLC is just hardcore!

Jessii 01-02-2007 09:37 AM

VLC, hands down, has the best UI of all the media players I've tried. Every Windows user I've recommended it to fell in love as well.

LocoMojo 01-02-2007 09:42 AM

MPlayer...controls at the keyboard, not on the screen taking up real estate and distracting you from what you're watching.

munkii 01-02-2007 12:08 PM

Kaffien! gone from just another video player app. to a killer one

J_K9 01-02-2007 12:15 PM

I would've gone for VLC because I use it on multiple OSs, but I've chosen xine instead (even over mplayer) simply because it was the first functional Linux media player I encountered all those years ago :)

samael26 01-02-2007 12:54 PM

kaffeine, but if it doesn't play on it --> Mplayer is an option along with VLC

Phlosten 01-02-2007 04:31 PM

mplayer, because it just works. I have never been able to get Helix to play anything on my systems. Does it actually play video of some sort?

The Cello Fellow 01-02-2007 11:08 PM

MPlayer or VLC? Hmmm...

...I guess I'll go with MPlayer. I've used it longest, it's the one with the Firefox plugin installed and it plays most everything. I do use VLC too, mostly for DVD's and the streaming features. But, MPlayer is my favorite. :)

Samotnik 01-03-2007 01:47 AM

Can't imagine something such simple, useable and mighty as mplayer.

wait4you 01-03-2007 02:07 AM

I like kaffeine,I think it is faster that Mplayer and reaplyer.

kesara 01-03-2007 07:29 AM

1. VLC Player
2. MPlayer

drokmed 01-03-2007 01:40 PM

VLC rulez in both linux and windoze.

It plays everything you throw at it, is small, clean, nice interface. Comes with free popcorn.

JimDog 01-03-2007 02:32 PM

VLC but I use mplayer....

Even though I use mplayer most of the time, VLC just keeps coming through for me on certain occasions. And the fact that it's multi-platform allows me to recommend it to all of my friends/co-workers who haven't made the switch to Linux yet.

dumais 01-03-2007 02:43 PM

Mplayer I think.

I first started using VLC with Windows a to watch DVDs. It was the only player that worked and it plays everything. Now I use Debian Sarge with VLC and iit's great!

bkd 01-04-2007 07:34 AM

Mplayer Is Da Best!

LeXz 01-04-2007 10:29 AM

I like mplayer, VLC and Totem, but I've voted for VLC.

elcaset 01-04-2007 11:18 AM

VLC is my favourite. It just works, even if I don't have all of the right codecs.

Happy GNU Year!

animeresistance 01-04-2007 11:20 AM

Mplayer is the best, but Xine is a tough rival. =)

anticapitalista 01-04-2007 11:44 AM

Use and voted for mplayer. Used to use xine and VLC is awesome. But mplayer-no gui is better.

Morty 01-04-2007 01:17 PM

But where is Codeine?

A nice and simple player, does what it's supposed to, play video. No crap like playlists and and trying to do other media formats which other applications are better suited for..

DEXTER_c 01-04-2007 01:57 PM

Kaffeine is the best, but I don't like it :)

Eternal_Newbie 01-04-2007 07:24 PM

Mplayer/gmplayer is my favourite by a narrow margin, then Xine, closely followed by VLC. I can do things and play files in mplayer that cause xine and VLC to barf. Xine is tops for playing DVD's ,though.

bloodbot 01-04-2007 07:50 PM

Mplayer for me.

kamran_pro 01-05-2007 05:10 AM

If installed from source with all codecs, MPlayer is by far the best for regular playback. Not to mention that dvd-nav support is also in experimental stages for it.

thebiggiantmouse 01-05-2007 07:25 AM

mplayer narrowly wins out over vlc, only because i can do so much more with it and the no gui(once i finally figured out how to use it). though vlc is a very close second because it is cross-platformed and doesn't required codecs.

ChaoticSoul 01-05-2007 07:28 AM

I voted for Totem but actually I don't really like it...

In fact, I haven't found yet a 'decent' media player for GNU/Linux.

MelfinatheBlue 01-05-2007 08:53 AM

VLC because it plays everything I throw at it. Including the anime with weird codecs, without downloading extra stuff. Plus it works on multiple OSes, takes good DVD screencaps, and I can recommend it to everyone I know (including the Mac users).

balajiz4u 01-05-2007 05:06 PM

VLC dear it can play almost all of my videos.
