I've been using Knoppix and SimplyMepis for a couple years now. I think Knoppix is better as a rescue disk and Mepis is better if you are planning on installing to harddrive. Knoppix has allowed me to save data on numerous Windows harddrives but I think Mepis is a little more user friendly.
Because I repair a lot of pc's I have found this one to be the most robust.
I've been concentrating on Linux LiveCDs the last few years because of all the tools it included. I lost track of my old buddy "The Ultimate Boot Disk". I used it when it was just a floppy disk utility until NTFS became so widespread. I do still carry copies of it but they don't get used much anymore. I tried using the BART PE live CD for Windows XP but it doesn't have all the tools available that Knoppix or Mepis do. I visited the UBCD site after reading your post and was impressed with the tools included. Looks like my computer will be tied up downloading it today.

I always make sure this cd is in my arsenal when I get a call. It has definitly come through in where knoppix and others did not did not fit the bill, although I carry it with me also.
