I haven't tried the most recent version, but in earlier versions there was an option to change the default behaviour when Opera starts up. If I understood your complaint correctly
I'd agree that I don't like the fact that it is not free software, even if it is free to download. Also, with extensions it is possible to get Firefox to behave in a very similar way to Opera, there are extensions for mouse gestures and greater control over tabs, for example (including an option to re-open previously open tabs when you start Firefox, which I think was your complaint about Opera).
I can't believe that so many people say Opera. Is open source nothing to you?
I chose FF, but I am actually very fond of Links for when I am reading the feeds with Snownews.
