XMMS can't be beat for simplicity, Rhythmbox is good for large collections, K3B is my choice for burning, and GRip is fine for ripping CD's. Plus, I use Gtkpod for dealing with the iPod.
While still in a pre-alpha stage, the Banshee music player is worth checking out (or at least keeping an eye on). It combines the features of the above applications, and does most of them well. Of course, every time I try plugging in my iPod, it crashes Banshee. Did I mention it's pre-alpha?
i voted for gstreamer. rhythmbox and banshee are good, and have just enough functionality. amorak and k3b, while quite good, are too unstable and crash all the time.
Yes, we know many of these apps are not directly comparable. The real question should be, which one does its job the best.
Ardour, MusE, but not Rosegarden?!
Consider this an official request to add Rosegarden to this list, though I also agree with the other commentary to the effect that this lump category really is far from ideal, even bearing in mind how you've grouped, say, Scribus with the GIMP and other such. I understand you're after "which of these does its job best," but you didn't bundle Kuickshow with the GIMP, and for good reason.
I think you need to focus on the creation/consumption divide, though a completely fair treatment of all the individual niches under the gigantic "audio" umbrella would require quite a lot of individual categories. Best sequencer, best recorder, best wave editor, best soft synth, best audio subsystem/infrastructural component... I'm sure other special interest groups in other categories have similar opinions about their own niches, and if you made all of us happy, it would get completely ridiculous. Audio creators/editors/synthesizers vs. Audio players doesn't seem too much of a reach though.
Well, anyway, please do at least add Rosegarden to this current melee, so we can get my one vote.
