probably just valnut being rubbish, I've heard the DC++ port (v. long overdue!) is ok now that development is actually underway on it. It's in Sid's APT, or you can get it from CVS. Intend to check it out asap. Reason enough to go back to the Flux!

I have tried other WMs with GNOME but it doesn't give any noticable speed-up. Metacity is one of the smallest and fastest window managers. It is GNOME that slows things down.

humbletech99 03-01-2006 05:26 AM

now we've all recognised that Gnome sucks, and in the "Window Manager Poll" since Metacity isn't really in the running, let's all agree that Fluxbox rules this category.

;-)

e17

i recently download e17 from a debian sid repository and i luv it. it has lots of work to do-but it is amazing the great effects but speed. it also works well under gnome.

right now metacity is kind of slow, but the new version of metacity coming up in gnome 2.14 will have a built-in composite manager :) !!!

d0g 03-03-2006 03:25 AM

Metacity already has built-in composite manager, it's just disabled. Resizing and moving around windows looks awesome.

Here are some wm performance tests http://www.rasterman.com/index.php?page=News

One reason why I don't use e17 - I'm addicted to Bluecurve =D

humbletech99 03-03-2006 04:42 AM

arrg, those benchmarks are blasphemous!

how can fluxbox being doing so badly in these, it's supposed to be fast!

d0g 03-03-2006 05:27 AM

Those are only two tests and for Fluxbox see the bottom note ;)

humbletech99 03-03-2006 05:42 AM

i did read that but still very disappointing, the newer fluxbox was several times faster but still comes in the bottom half (just under halfway) in terms of performance...

what happened to the dominance of fluxbox?

is this but a weird dream...

humbletech99 03-03-2006 04:53 PM

Fluxbox still rules, Fluxbox still dominates, wait till the poll comes it, betcha the flux wins.

Fluxbox is the best...
