Thanks for the reasons for liking Fluxbox, joe f. Your description of the things you like about Fluxbox apply to Enlightenment, except Enlightenment adds some snazziness, that isn't distracting or troublesome. E is fast, configurable, and has some really neat features.

In any event, thanks for the post. :)

Peace...

You probably don't give yourself enough credit if you can write php code. :)

you may not be getting the most out of fluxbox but that's ok, when you realise how easy it is to write your own menus and key bindings, you'll wonder what you ever did without them...

give it a try...

Thanks for the post :)

Well I suppose it's seeing good work on the web that keeps me interested in being a developer.

My problem is being able to invest my time so I can go into more depth, though I would certainly like to.

I'm glad the Fluxbox has won the WM of the year. There is something so simple about it packaged in less than 1 MB that it's got to be the lightest WM around.

It's also so easy to generate menus if you don't want to manually:

Just use fluxbox-generate_menu to constantly update your menu with the apps you have.

Yay! Fluxbox won! Way to go!
The best Window Manager ever... though it does look kind of "dumb", it is quite customizable.
Nothing else to say except FLUXBOX RULES!

w00t! Fluxbox won!

You like a simplistic and fast WM? Get Fluxbox!
You have an old computer? Get Fluxbox!
You like to edit config files and still make your desktop look nice? Get Fluxbox!

erm...you want to go with the crowd? Get Fluxbox?! :D

ingvildr 05-11-2006 10:19 AM

hmm openbox doesn't get the credit it deserves, so i expect everyone to be voting openbox for next year :p

Gogul 05-11-2006 10:23 AM

I've never used openbox myself so I'll have to search on google and see what the hub bub is about... what's it like in your opinion anyway?

humbletech99 05-11-2006 11:00 AM

true, openbox should get more credit but to be fair I've used it and prefer fluxbox, althought only subtely different, so really, most people who like them are gonna fall into the fluxbox vote.

ingvildr 05-11-2006 01:47 PM

Gogul, its the fastest WM i have ever used and it has some nice gui tools like obconf for configuration and obmenu for you guessed it menu writting. It is a little bare when you first install because unlike fluxbox it doesn't have a panel, but if what you want is a simple and fast window manager that just does its job openbox is king :)

Gogul 05-12-2006 03:17 AM

Thanks for that ingvildr. I think I will give it a try later :)

Worksman 05-15-2006 07:43 AM

I like Fluxbox not because it won or because more people use it. I like it because it's light and in the same time very customizable. You can also build you own themes without too much problems. Unlike OpenBox which I've tried it has a task-bar built-in so you don't need to search for a good or even better one. The things I run mostly with Fluxbox is unclutter, so that my mouse pointer will dissapear when it's located on a window for too much(but it won't if it's on the root window, i.e. the desktop its self), the fbpager so that I can see what apps I am running on what desktops(I don't really like the fact that when transparency is on and I change the desktop it flickers a bit... maybe someone knows a better one... I really doubt that...), conky set on the root window with double boffer(again I don't like one thing about this one too, the fact that when set with no own window at updates it redraws the whole root window) the best looking system monitor ;-) and xbindkeys, to set some key combinations to start certain apps(although Fluxbox has built-in support...). All these are started from ~/.fluxbox/apps and not ~/.xinitrc.
I also love the flux menu to start applications!

why do you need a panel?, thats what is good anout openbox its so light .
