How do Bash and Zsh differ?

MensaWater 02-16-2006 01:59 PM

See:

http://zsh.sunsite.dk/FAQ/zshfaq02.html#l14

The section "Similarities to bash" talks about that and some differences.

One difference they didn't mention there:
One starts with the first 2 letters of the alphabet and the other starts with the last letter of the alphabet. :D

bash is definitely the best

jhigz 02-19-2006 10:27 PM

I use bash. I have been meaning to test drive zsh for awhile. I guess nows as good a time as any...

SkyEye 02-26-2006 04:17 AM

As I said earlier bash is my favourite. But there is something I think is worth mentioning.

Busybox. This small app makes things lot easier for embedded system builders, distro makers, etc. It's really worth recognition

bash

I don't use a shell often enough to be very particular. I thought it would be best to stick with the shell used in all GNU/Linux distributions.

Here are a few other reasons:
  • any Linux documentation would likely be written about bash
  • any documentation I write, I would want to reach the widest audience
  • chances are that a script on my system would be written in sh, a close relative of bash, I might have a better chance of understanding what the script is doing
  • using another shell would probably hurt my puny brain :D
  • I like a lot of features of both csh an the korn shell; but, in practice, I found that I rarely used anything but bash

zsh - I thought of patching bash to add two features. I use them in zsh now - they were already there.

brockers 02-28-2006 09:41 AM

While zsh is functionally better; all of my scripts are built for bash... its simply become a matter of usage over any other consideration (although the bashmod for zsh tab completion works pretty well now.)

chawly 03-01-2006 02:02 AM

Got to go with the flow - bash

tweakerxp 03-01-2006 08:03 AM

Can I use a life line and call a friend? :D

Bash is my final answer.

chawly 03-01-2006 08:28 AM
