Desktop Environment of the Year

If you're looking for Fluxbox, Window Maker, Enlightenment or similar options - they are in the Window Manager of the Year poll.

KDE, it continues to make strides in becoming the best free desktop on the market... Usability, looks, and especially features. Plus KDE (KDE4 specifically) has a bright future ahead of it.

Gnome, cause it is not so fancy as KDE (that's advantage) and also well does its job.

Ruben2 01-30-2006 03:36 AM

Xfce, it's much faster than Gnome or KDE, and still very userfrendly

fotoguy 01-30-2006 06:42 AM

Personally I really like KDE, it was the first GUI I used and came to enjoy the eye candy and the useful tools and applications. Gnome too is quite nice and has some useful tools and applications as well, but I think I'm just a KDE person, just like people are drawn to different distros. Xfce is quite a nice little GUI to if you want something fast or have an old machine with not much memory.

Gnome

Gnome sits well for me between the complexity of KDE and the (Desktop Environment) minimalist XFCE4, though I try them all a couple of times a year to keep abreast of developments.

For me, my Gnome desktop handles shares well, stays out of my way, and lets me do the work that I want to do. With the proper plugins, Nautilus is even decent these days.

Objectively I would say Gnome deserves the title . Because of its the progress it has MADE

Personal gut-feeling response would be KDE

Sonik21 01-30-2006 11:42 AM

i like gnome but i like KDE better. i also use xfce. but mostly i use KDE because its what im used to using all the time so i know it well.

ALInux 01-30-2006 12:35 PM

Ive been stuck with KDE all the time from the beginning...tried gnome a few times..but just could not stick to it

anticapitalista 01-30-2006 12:37 PM

By far the best improved and for it's features has to be KDE though I don't use it. (fluxbox here)

fcaraballo 01-30-2006 01:07 PM

I mainly use Fluxbox, but I am giving XFce a good try and have to say I'm impressed. Will be interesting to see the changes to XFce 4.4.

reddazz 01-30-2006 01:25 PM

I really like XFCE and GNOME, but KDE takes the title for me. It keeps on improving at a very fast rate and has a lot of features that are lacking in other DEs.

episode96 01-30-2006 01:55 PM

KDE is the most solid, the most complete, and the one who happens to have a vast number of good applications written for it. So, I voted KDE.

mjjzf 01-30-2006 01:57 PM

I use Gnome at the moment, but both KDE and Xfce have also made significant improvements in recent years.

Kensai 01-30-2006 03:04 PM

I love Gnome unfortunately KDE is tacking the best steps in the right direction so my vote goes to kde, which I'm using in my FreeBSD desktop.
