Welcome to the 2004 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards

The polls will be open very soon! Vote for your favorite applications of the year. Have fun and good luck to all the nominees.

jeremy 12-30-2004 08:32 PM

The polls are now open! We are still looking for nominations in many categories, so if you see your favorite app missing let us know ASAP. The polls will close on February 3rd, so get all your votes in ASAP!

Would be pretty cool if we could see the results as they come in - it'd be like watching an election all over again, <SARCASM> and we all know how much we enjoyed that experience</SARCASM>
:D

trickykid 12-31-2004 08:03 AM

I'm glad the results are hidden this year. Quite honestly, I felt some of the really close races last year were only close cause members could see what the vote count is.

Cheers!

XavierP 12-31-2004 08:08 AM

It is more fun to wait until the end and we get to see that huge .gif of Jeremy opening the envelope with the top 3 in each category*

*Just kidding :) But the "it's better to wait" comment still stands.

bobbens 12-31-2004 09:04 AM

Sorta annoying to go from post to post answering polls, you should've done some sort of php page with a next button so you just cruise through all the polls in 5 secs :P. Really looking forward to see the winners.

EDIT: btw i didn't see gkrellm, they deserve a prize, dunno what category it fits in, maybe awesomeness :P.

I'd have to say a new category, maybe perhaps.. "Best Linux Utility Tool" or something like that..

And I just noticed, don't we usually have a best "Programming Language" award? I can't remember these things anymore.. ;)

Yup, that sounds likea good category. Maybe another for best linux backup program, but then again this is probably overkill :P.

Great idea, C++ for teh win :P. Maybe there should be best web programming language too, because C++ and php have two completely different uses and shouldn't be pitted against each other, but of course, php would surely win best web programming language :P.

reddazz 12-31-2004 10:00 AM

inkscape and sodipodi are missing from the best graphics section. I have to agree that it's better to have the results hidden, it's more exciting to see the results later.

bpt 12-31-2004 08:48 PM

No Shell category?

Boffy 01-01-2005 01:03 PM

When do the polls close?

jeremy 01-01-2005 01:12 PM

February 3rd.

I should let u know then... the results are only hidden if you aren't logged in - if you logout and then see, the results are visible :D

maybe u guys should fix that if u really want to hide the results :p

peteathome 01-01-2005 03:10 PM

This is a fun poll. However, I was disappointed to not see K3b mentioned anywhere? This is a great app and deserves mention somewhere. Maybe a new catagory: Other. Could include GKrellm in it also.
Did I miss it? If so, sorry for the post.

springdog 01-03-2005 04:18 PM

I think its better to not see the results, especially for newbies like me who can subconsciously be impressed with a popular app. I do wish that we didn't have to wait another month, though.

tamoneya 01-04-2005 10:03 PM

I think it would be funny if we made a worst OS catagory that only had windows as an option.

So umm.. what would be the point? Funny but kind of stupid in a way I would have to say..

But that's assuming everyone here won't get offended! Somebody is going to feel sad  :(

rivang 01-06-2005 04:10 PM

What about best CMS (Content Management System) of the year?

Some examples would be...

PHPNuke
PostNuke
PHPWebsite
Xoops
Plone
SlashCode
myPHPNuke

or others...

J.W. 01-09-2005 03:59 PM

Can the Feb 3 voting deadline be added to the Forum description (ie, what you see on the Forum home page)? To minimize the chances of someone thinking "I'll get to that eventually" and missing the cutoff, it might help to have the date visible up front. -- J.W.

jeremy 01-09-2005 10:24 PM

J.W., done.

insyte 01-13-2005 11:08 AM

It's really fun to vote. Can't wait for the results. It's good that the results are hidden so the popularity bias is removed.

Samsara 01-13-2005 01:33 PM

1) Since we have LiveCD as a separate category, how about distinguishing between binary and source-based distros?

2) Where can I find previous years' results?

As for CMS as a new category, remember Mambo ( http://www.mamboserver.com/ )!

Yes, and a best Toolkit (Qt, Gtk, TCL/Tk, swing, awt) award would be also interesting...

ferreirafm 02-01-2005 07:55 AM

Let's make things better...
Vote!

marvin6161 02-01-2005 09:25 AM

Perhaps a dock app category for next year?

mlinuxk 02-03-2005 12:27 AM

I have tried three distros this year. I like the cli better than all the gui. My first real computer was a PDP-11 runninf Sys 5. I was lost in windows land for 20 years and made my way back to NIX land. I was weened on Red Hat and like Fedora., but suse is soooo cool. Gnome stinks purty good so KDE is much better. I have never liked the weasles at Novell, since years ago I forced to use their high priced network software, I bought a computer with Xandros OS. It is a lot like windows. It has a 10 million long number to put in before I can use my software,{which I bought) and it crashed when I tried to run it. Didn't have that problem with the copy of Suse that replaced it.. Anyone need a very reasonably priced unregistered copy of Xandros OS? I didn't see Solaris on the list as it is not truely Linux, but close and it is very secure. I look forward to using them all as I build new machines for my network. Debian looks interesting, when I get time I'll have to try it out. I didn't see server software on thle list but my vote is APACHE.

AC97Conquerer 02-03-2005 08:52 AM

It's February 3rd!! I've been waiting a month to see the end! AAHH!!

jeremy 02-03-2005 09:10 AM

The polls do indeed close today. If you haven't voted yet you don't have much time left, so hurry! The results should be available soon after the polls close.

--jeremy

vharishankar 02-03-2005 09:17 AM

I can hardly wait for the results, Jeremy! :)

I hope there are a couple of surprise winners in there!!

NamShub 02-03-2005 08:52 PM

Jeremy:

Woah sorry about that. I thought the results were public so I posted some comments; I didn't know it was a glitch in the forum...

Obviously all those posts make no sense without the result, I guess you can delete them if theres gonnna be a delay before its official.

Sorry.

jeremy 02-03-2005 09:13 PM

NamShub, no problem. There was certainly no way for you to know the results weren't official. The slip up was 100% my fault. I'd anticipate the press release going out Sunday or Monday, but I might give a sneak peak at the results before then ;)

--jeremy

jelang 02-03-2005 10:43 PM

FWIW, I tried to vote a little after 8:30 PM PST on 23 Feb but the polls were already closed. I thought they were open through this date.

jeremy 02-04-2005 10:15 AM

The polls closed 35 days to the second after they started.

Why can't i see the results yet

supergrapeman 02-05-2005 01:41 AM

Yep, fair is fair, we've been waiting a long month. Please can we see the results?

C'mon waiting is getting very boring

J.W. 02-05-2005 03:20 PM

I'm certain that the results are being counted as we speak and that the results will be unveiled shortly. -- J.W.

ultramancool 02-05-2005 03:58 PM

Why would they have 2 count them
The forums software does that automatically

babygnu 02-05-2005 04:09 PM

why they don't just show the results?
Maybe they first have to falsify the statistc ;)

jeremy 02-05-2005 05:53 PM

The forum software doesn't audit any votes, I do that. The original announcement mearly said the polls would close on the 3rd and made no mention of when the results would be available. Originally, I had contemplated not making them available until LinuxWorld. I see that's not going to go over too well, so I am finishing the auditing now and scrambling to write the press release. I'll get the numbers released as soon as possible.

jeremy 02-05-2005 06:11 PM

The results have been released. The polls will be viewable in about 2 minutes.
