Problem in REBOOT and SHUTDOWN

Hi all folks,

FreeBSD 5.2
RAM 320MB
AMD K6

I am running into difficulty on 'reboot' and 'shutdown' the PC and could not find a solution from their site. I am in anticpiation this site could throw me som light.

As ROOT

Reboot
=====
following warning appeared;
Syncing disks, buffers remaining ...... 1 1
done
Uptime: um31s
Shutting down ACPI
Rebooting ....
Keyboard reset did not work, attempting CPU Shutdown.

Then the PC hanged here.

Shutdown
======
# shutdown -h now
....
......
press any key to reboot ....

Hitting a key would start the warning as 'Reboot' and the PC then hanged.

Kindly advise. TIA

Its not hung, its also not a bad thing. The machine is trying acpi calls for a soft reboot, its finished all of the important stuff, its just getting stuck on switching the power. I think its because the FreeBSD 4.9+ kernels only come with acpi turned on and I've never seen a K6-3 or below board with acpi support. Look into the FreeBSD manual difference between apm and acpi and you can recompile the FreeBSD kernel to use the later, but its no big deal, the system was done shutting down, the disk was synced, everything was unmounted, so it was a clean shutdown... at least it looked that way, did you have a long filesystem check on the next boot?

Cheers,

Hi Moderator,

Tks for your response.

I think it was a clean shutdown.

1) Reboot version
Soft-reboot (Ctrl+Alt+Del) could not work. Hard reboot (pressing reset button) was the only solution. On reboot no long filesystem check was noticed. The PC worked normally.

2) Shutdown version
Hitting a key would start the same warning as in Reboot mentioned above. I have to turn off the power manually. Power on the PC again, no long filesystem check found. The PC worked normally without problem.

Another guy on FBSD mailing list encounted the same problem. His solution was to downgrade to FBSD 4.9

I think the dichotomy, I was wrong above, is that with FreeBSD 4.9 APM is the compiled in power management utility and with 5.0+ its acpi, your board only has APM. A FreeBSD kernel recompile is humourously easy. Check the how-to over at the FreeBSD handbook, and then compiled apmd from ports and you should be rock and roll.

Cheers,
