pppoe kernel module

I compiled a new kernel and when booted into the kernel I can't dial into my adsl provider. The pppoe module isn't in my .config file so I tried to add that line into the .config file and recompile. When i run make the line I added is removed and the compile starts. I looked through the entire menuconfig to see if I can find pppoe and couldn't find it. What section is it under? I've been looking under 'networking support'.

I'm using kernel version 3.1.7
Thanks in advance

If people knew which *BSD you were talking about they'd have more chance of helping you.
