new dedicated server bought, so what's next?


hi mates, yeah. i wasnt too sure about this, i just bought a dedicated server running on freebsd, it's a new server, and i havent type any commands in, what command must i type? anyone can help me? how do i run my nameservers? or commands to type 1st?

sorry, newbie here. willing to learn more on freebsd, kinda interesting.

Well, nobody here can just teach you how to operate a BSD Internet server. There's a lot that goes into it depending on exactly what services you want to offer. Your server provider probably has a bunch of docs for you to read, but I will tell you the first command to type when logged in: it is "man man" (no quotes). This will teach you how to use the system manual pages (the documentation). When you're done reading, press the "q" key to exit the man page viewer.

The very first admin task you have is to create a non root user for yourself, if you don't have one already, so you can experiment with commands without hosing the system. The I would suggest going to www.freebsd.org and reading the handbook. Once you've gotten some of the basics down from it, you can start worrying about how to configure the servers you'll be running.
