Could not start GUI login and KDE
Hi all folks,
FreeBSD 5.2
Installation went through without complaint but GUI login could not start neither KDE nor GNOME desktop.
After rebooting it popus
Login:
(I suppose it is INIT 3)
login as 'root' without password. 'startx' worked starting 3 Xterm windows simultaneously. If entered a password and hit <ENTER> it popup 'incorrect password' and could not login.
I have tried following steps to start KDE and GUI login without success.
# ee /etc/rc.conf
1) adding
XSESSION="kde-3"
DISPLAYMANAGER=xdm
(remark: also tried '=kdm')
2) Rebooted PC
GUI login still could not popup. PC started at 'INIT 3' as before
3)
# which kde
# whereis kde
# locate kde
could not find it, no printout.
Kindly advise
a) how to check whether KDE and GNOME have been installed. If 'NOT' how to download and install them from FreeBSD website
b) how to solve 'password' problem as stated above
c) Immediately after the completion of installation the PC rebooted automatically. 'XF86Config.new' was found on super ROOT. I have copy and rename it to /etc/X11/XF86Config. Why this happened
(Remark: I installed FreeBSD 5.2 from CD1)
TIA
B.R.
