Configure monitor for fixed display

Noob needs some help.

I have loaded FreeBSD 5.3 stable onto a PII/350
The graphics card is a MultiMedia Sportster A50 AGP 8MB OEM, sis chipset
The Monitor is Optiquest Q51: fh 30-54 ; fv 50-120 capable of 1024x768

I have learned how to get into xorg.conf.new to edit the monitor section.

What I am trying to do is set a fixed screen resolution for:
800x600
24bit
monitor frequency of 60 hz.

I am using a 4port KVM to switch between computers. I don't know how to set the monitor section of xorg.conf to match the other machine displays.

The other machines are windows w2k and wXP. In both of these OS's I have the display set for monitor refresh = 60 hz , 32 bit true color, 800x600

Thanks

I don't know that you can do 32bit depth...Never tried it.

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen1"
Device "nvidia1"
Monitor "Monitor1"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection

That would be the appropriate section to edit though.

Edit: And I'm not sure about the refresh rate.

Thanks...That's pretty much what I have been doing.

While I am not sure how to qualify it and even though I have made those changes, whenever I switch PC's via the KVM, the monitor clicks. I beleive the monitor is switching to a higher refresh rate.

The clicking does not occur between the windows pc's where I have set the refresh rate to 60hz.

In FreeBSD you have the ability to give a range for. My monitor is good for:

fhorz 30-54
fvert 50-120

I am wondering if I can just "FIX" the fvert at 60. One value, not a range.

Yeah, I didn't know how to do it for a single value either, just a range.

This is a follow-up to my original post.

The results may not be the same for you, but this is what I did, which fixed the problem.

I have a KVM with four(4) computer connected. Three windows machines and one FreeBSD box. The issue was, when switching between windows machines, the monitor has a fixed Horizontal freq 60hz +/-

When I switched to the FreeBSD, the monitor freq always changed to a higher Horizontal Frequency.

My Monitor is a Optiquest Q51, which has an on screen monitor utility for adjusting diffrent screen attributes, but not the frequency.

I was able to see what the actual frequency was during a windows session.
- H 37.9 khz
- V 60.3 hz

Within xorg.conf.new I made a static assignment for H/V
Code:
Section "Monitor"
	Identifier	"Monitor0"
	VendorName	"Optiquest"
	ModelName	"Q51"
	HorisSync	37.9
	VertRefresh	60
EndSection
This efectively stopped the monitor from changing frequencies when switching from/to differnt machines

I hope this helps others

- Don
