I want to install FreeBSD as research, but I don't know which iso file to download. I saw 6 iso files on the download page and I want to install using CD method.

You need to download all the disc* cd's.

For booting you should use '7.0-RELEASE-i386-disc1.iso'.

If you want to make very basic install (base system + ports + sources) then you need only
7.0-RELEASE-i386-disc1.iso

If you want to install Gnome or KDE or something bigger like openoffice, then you need all three cds:
7.0-RELEASE-i386-disc1.iso
7.0-RELEASE-i386-disc2.iso
7.0-RELEASE-i386-disc3.iso

but it will be better to download just one DVD, you can get one here:

I heard about partitioning BSD is calculated by cylinder but not in MB ??
My current haddisk is hd1 XP and hd2 Ubuntu. I would like to install BSD in hd1 and remove XP. i checked BSD site and know BSD use ad0 etc... So, my hd1 should be ad0 and hd2 should be ad2?
I tried to study the disk allocation but i found it quite hard to understand because its different compare to linux. As information, my hd1 has 22GB space, how much space should I allocate my a b c e f ??

parttioning by cylinders is POSSIBLE in FreeBSD but you may also do classic cfdisk like partitioning using MB units, hit Z key several times to adjust your units (KB/MB/GB) while partitioning in sysinstall

if you have hda1 + hda2 then it would be ad0 and ad1 in FreeBSD.

Many things will be DIFFRENT from Linux, remember Linux is not UNIX.

in FreeBSD /home is symlink to /usr/home.

What do you mean by "standard MBR boot manager"? that tells nothing.
FreeBSD bootmanager is able to load Windows without any problems, If you also want to use Linux, then go for GRUB or LILO.

@vermaden -- I think he's talking about the sysinstall step that lets you install a standard MBR or a FBSD bootmanager.

Anyway, I concur with the LILO || GRUB recommendation if running side by side with Linux.

This is my 1st post here, nice to see my DVD has been given some people use.
Indeed, use my DVD iso instead of the separate CD iso's as what vermaiden stated. It includes the doc's & all installable files(packages), and is smaller than the others downloaded separate.

Yes almost exactly, except I made them using GUI tools and actually make the process available on pastebin for Dru Lavigne, we collaborated i IRC and we decided I would do the actual CD, and she made the instructions so anyone can do it, here is the original article:
