As far as I can tell, I didn't do anything that should cause any problems, but it caused problems. It's happened to me a few times using FreeBSD. Like I said, I guess if I want to experiment with things without reading how to do something or something along those lines, I should use packages to speed things up. It's not worth the time it takes, to me, because I like Linux a lot anyways, and it's quick and easy and if I mess something up a little I have no reason to worry.

I had a similar experience with FreeBSD years back. There was a pretty major upgrade to X and it caused all kinds of problems for me. I was coming to BSD from Gentoo/LFS so building from ports wasn't an obstacle, but that upgrade mess persuaded me to take OpenBSD seriously.

I don't have anything against FreeBSD, per se (I have a FreeBSD server running at my house as we speak), but after getting a taste of OpenBSD's quality I stopped looking at other OS's.
