what is BSD?


hi i am i little curios as to what bsd is exactly! i have used it before and are considering having a multi boot between slackwar and a bsd. is BSD based on UNIX or is it like an open souse UNIX?, where did it start?, what does BSD stand for or mean?

just wondering thats all.

when i did use it i liked it very much which is why i am considering changing from a compleat linux user to a linux slash BSD user!
